- My room makeover::
- Our tiny kitchen had outdated wallpaper, dark wood and old linoleum. The configuration was terrible: fridge partially blocked the doorway to the basement, the open dishwasher blocked the back door, a huge black hood/microwave shelf above the range. Initially we considered a large remodel by pushing out to the screened-in porch until we discovered we loved having a back porch and didn't want to give it up. I spent hours trying to figure out how all the puzzle pieces would fit in this little footprint most efficiently. IKEA's online planning tool helped a lot. The original wood floors were refinished to match the rest of the house. We replaced the ceiling fan with can lights. The cabinets hold so much more than before using the dead space above. The full-size dishwasher was replaced by an 18" model to gain cabinet space. The scale is just right and all the space is put to use. We worked weekends for 6 weeks instead of the 2 we initially thought and it ended up costing $20k.
- My makeover advice::
- A project will always take longer than you think. Always! And we had to be really firm with the company that refinished our floor. They wanted to replace all the wood to ensure it would look perfect but we were okay with (and preferred) a more worn look with the wood that was already there. They even delivered all the wood needed to replace all the flooring but we made sure they only replaced a few rotten boards and took back the rest. We definitely did not want to waste all the perfectly good wood that was already there!
- What I love most about my new space::
- The warm floors, the new appliances and all the room we have in our cabinets! We can store so much in such a small space!
