- My room makeover::
- When we moved into our new place, it was in rough shape. We had to refinish the floors, paint the entire space (kept it white), purchase new appliances, and move electrical to accommodate a light fixture over the dining room where an oddly placed ceiling fan was. We hired a contractor and with a little DIY, it took roughly 4 weeks to complete, before we moved furniture. The floors cost $1,100 to refinish, and the contractor was a friend who charged only $1,000 to complete the painting and electrical work. For Furniture, we purchased many great pieces on Craigslist, found a sofa at a Restoration Hardware outlet, a couple of things at Ikea, and inherited a some things. All in, it took roughly 6 weeks and cost about $6,000.
- My makeover advice::
- Know what you want, before you get started, and be patient! The transformation does not happen overnight, and when you buy things or make decisions too quickly to "force" the project to completion, you might regret doing so later on, and it will only end up costing more money. I also encourage people to look on Craigslist for things - we discovered you can buy "used" for far less than new, and often times get far better quality. And lastly, hire a contractor that you trust!
- What I love most about my new space::
- The natural light the floods the space, and the bright, airy feel of the white walls.
