- My room makeover::
- The original bathroom in my 1980s New Orleans ranch featured a dated floor plan with dropped ceilings over the vanity and tub shower combo. A wall separated the vanity from the toilet and tub, and cut off the natural light from the lone window in the space. My goal was to open up and brighten the room and achieve a luxe New Orleans look with moderately priced materials.
- My makeover advice::
- Spend all the time you need on planning. Check whether your designer will charge on an hourly basis for just the services you need. Use Pinterest to assist in planning your project. In this case, all possible choices for materials went on my Pinterest board, and my designer could pin to it as well. I recommend being around the project frequently to answer questions and go for last minute supply runs. I went about 30% over budget, so I would always have some funds in reserve. In the future, I will have all materials on hand before beginning construction.
- What I love most about my new space::
- The cool walk in shower with ceiling light and shiny chrome fixtures including wall mounted storage for bath products. I feel so glamorous using it! I love my custom vanity with enough storage I can leave the marble countertops pretty clear. Also, custom Shaker peg rails for towels come in handy for hanging damp laundry to dry. The slimmed down thrift store armoire (from 23" deep to 16" deep) is another favorite feature.
