My room makeover::
Despite the wonderful bones, the living room was dark and uninspiring when I found this 1959 MCM. I began by removing the vinyl wallpaper and painted the walls and trim a warm white to brighten the space. I removed the heavy window valences and sanded the ceiling down and stained it a bit lighter to provide depth with the beams and further brighten the space. I then installed hardwood floors (natural oak w/a matte finish to tie into the rest of the house) and ran electric through the center beam for a pendant light that softens the ceiling geometry. Pieces are a mix of old and new, high and low. Textures from the rug and fabrics along with pops of color from the art and accessories provide the modern, happy vibe I sought.
My makeover advice::
I always say just follow your instincts and be realistic about time. Don't try and do everything at once and allow it to organically evolve over time. Painting and flooring were rather quick processes but finding the right balance of pieces took some time. I also like to begin with a neutral base on large pieces( i.e. a sofa )and then use colorful textiles on pillows and chairs to tie together art and accessories.
What I love most about my new space::
The house has a very open floor plan and the living room is the first room one sees when entering so I knew it was important to set the tone for the rest of the decor. It now has the fresh, modern vibe I wanted with the mid century sensibilities I love.
