My room makeover::
I wanted a room with plenty of sunlight and a serene work place to help me get my creative juices going whether I'm making music or doing my art. The room had the perfect window that I've always wanted, but the layout was just a little small. I needed to fit a desk, a bed in this 6'x12' space. So I built some additional storage for my art supplies and equipment. I knew I needed to maximize my storage space, I decided to build a platform bed with under-bed storage. It gave me a 6'x6'x1' storage space & a very swag area to sleep at night and lounge during the day. Everything was great for about 4 years, until I accumulated more paintings I've done over the years, so I thought I'd build a suspended loft bed to accommodate all that empty space I haven't utilized yet above my desk. I ended up with an additional 4'x6' overhead storage that I hacked from an Ikea Mandal Bed set. Whole process of the lofted bed took about 4 months to finish with an hour or two a day each day after work.
My makeover advice::
Really determine what the purpose of the space is, then pick out your 3 essential furniture pieces. Mine was a desk, my bed, and a bookcase that doubled as my guitar stand. Once you determine what furniture you need the most, then the rest is easier. I'll also say vertical space is so precious in New York, so I try to elevate my bed wherever I move to. To have it double as storage.
What I love most about my new space::
I love the lighting the most and the minimalistic feel I aim for. I originally had everything white and birch, but now I have a ladder that supports my suspended lofted bed in black, and it is actually quite a nice accent color! I wanted to give that geometric look when people come in, and first thing people notice is that 1) it's a very white room (but not in an empty way) 2) that i have a lot vertical lines that I think help people calm their mind.
