- My room makeover::
- When we moved into our home, it felt so dark and small. The previous owners had a more popular, earth tone aesthetic that was the opposite of our own! The white oak floors were in rough shape in high traffic areas. The day we got the keys, I went in and began painting the room, base boards to ceiling. We decided to redo the floors last minute, mid paint, and after getting a recommendation, we lucked out and had a guy come do our floors the next day! It took less than a week for multiple rooms and cost around $2000. He also replaced the awful metal floor vents with wood vents that were flush with the floor. All we had when we moved in was our couch, coffee table, and Ikea bookshelves. We purchased our chair from Joybird, waited a good while for the floors to dry before buying a rug from Rugs USA, and slowly added in some thrifted pieces. We've been in our home since July of last year so I feel like we've been able to put the room together a lot more quickly than I anticipated.
- My makeover advice::
- Go for it! We broke so many design rules (I bought the paint before we had even moved in!). But we love the space. I have Pinterest boards that helped me "curate" my overall vision, and focused on one thing at a time to make sure we bought items we loved. In fact, we're still saving up to replace the ceiling fan with a cuter one. Know your aesthetic (whatever it may be) before investing in expensive, long term items, and trust your gut, not other people's ideas of what they think your home should look like.
- What I love most about my new space::
- All the color and light. Before, each room was so dim, but the whole house makes me happy to walk in the door! I love that it's so different, too. Living in Idaho, it is not uncommon to have camo curtains and half a moose in your house, so for my husband and I it's an oasis from the hunting culture around us. We have a lot of quirky art found on etsy and society6, and some handmade items like the teapot lamp my husband made me, that really add our personalities to the room. My husband loves that it's a bright, peaceful space. And no, he is not bothered at all by pink! Why should he be? Colors are for everyone!
