My room makeover::
The old kitchen was filled with pine cabinets + wainscoting, lighting and flooring that were not very fitting in a mid-century modern Eichler home.

There was limited work space and placement of key appliances made prep and cooking difficult.

The entire process took nearly 8 months and included full demolition of the old kitchen and re-building of the new. We completed nearly all the work ourselves, including the molding and forming of the concrete counters and island, assembling IKEA kitchen cabinetry and laying down new flooring.

Total budget $25K

Cabinets: IKEA + Semihandmade Custom Doors in Walnut
Flooring: Armstrong Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT)
Lighting: Tom Dixon Pendant Lighting - YLighting
Range: BlueStar 6-burner Range
Tile backsplash: Fireclay Tile
Wine Fridge: Home Depot
Miseno Sink: Build.com
Grohe Faucet: eBay
Zephyr Hood: Build.com
Aluminum Sliding Door: Milgard
Fiberglass Counter Stools: Modernica
My makeover advice::
We really wanted to start renovation on our house on day one. We needed to save up and plan for our big renovation, so we ended up living in the space for a year before we did any work on the house. We are glad we waited before making any big changes to the space. We really got to know the space and flow of how we used it, which helped for planning the final design and placement of all the elements.
What I love most about my new space::
I cook a lot and now I can prepare meals and have full view of the the main living area, including the living room, where the family hangs out the most. The kids can also sit up at the counter now and help out with cooking prep - there's plenty of room for everyone.

The bright, lagoon blue Fireclay tile backsplash is one of my favorite elements of the design and acts as a nice centerpiece for the new kitchen. We spend a lot of time in this room every day as a family, and despite a long (stressful) DIY renovation, we're very proud we put together every single piece of it ourselves.
