Karyn, an interior designer, found the perfect island bungalow in Coronado, California. Of course, it needed a little sprucing up before it would be the entertaining and living space she dreamed of. Check out how she transformed this studio into a chic, multipurpose space:

How gorgeous is this? We love the navy and white against the dark bamboo floors.
From Karyn:
I had just moved to the island of Coronado and had the perfect bungalow apartment in mind. I envisioned something small but homey with a comfortable outdoor area. The universe must have been on my side because not two minutes after making my wish list I found the perfect studio apartment. Being a designer has its perks, especially after walking into this place. I immediately envisioned a comfortable home perfect for entertaining. The dirty carpet and handprints on the walls didn't deter me!
Once the lease was signed we got to work. We painted all the walls, replaced the carpet with bamboo flooring, and added 4" thick white baseboards. We used West Elm curtains to separate the bedroom area from the living area. The space may be small (400 square feet), but it accommodates a bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen! I own a design firm in Coronado, Bungalow 56, and have to say that your own home is one of the hardest to design. I am in love with how this remodel turned out!

Thanks, Karyn!

Lovely!
Ripping out the carpet and replacing it with hardwood floors immediately makes the space nicer. Great job!
Terrific!
Looks more roomier after you decorated it! Amazing use of color. I especially like the navy color on the walls in the small space yet it actually opened the space. Thanks for the inspiration!
wow!
WOW! I love it! This is the kind of place I'd live on my own. It is HOME!
We visited Coronado on our honeymoon! Such a lovely place. Evidently it's part of the building code on the island that no two homes are allowed to look exactly alike (or so our tour guide said), which I think is awesome. Our tour guide also told us that the MEDIAN home price was $1M (in 2006). Not quite so awesome.
This is a beautiful and incredibly well designed space. Well done!
Beautiful transformation!
love the dark wood floor...!
LOVELY
Wow! I actually gasped out loud at that amazing redo!
Nice job Bungalow 56!
Very nice. I am not ussualy into the beach-y type room, but I appreciate this.
Beautiful transformation!
I love it when someone(designer or not) takes the time to make a rental their own.
Cosy!
There is something so luscious about walking on dark wood floors. Taking the earth tone pallets of the dark sea and ground always seduces the mind and emotions.
Well played!
Well this is fantastic. The fabric and the open back wood shelving make this room. Beautiful!
Love where you put the couch - it helps make two rooms. Some people seem so afraid to pull their couches away from the walls, it's sad. This looks fantastic! ENJOY!!!
I love the dark walls against the bright sun that is pretty much year round in Coronado. It definitely gives a moodiness that really stands out next to all the beachiness that a usual seaside bungalow would have.
The only thing I'm not loving is the collage of pictures on the wall next to the couch. They seem out of scale and uncoordinated compared to the rest of the room. Maybe the pics don't do it justice.
Well done!
I love it when people invest in their rental. My first two apartments I didn't and it would've made such a difference in just walking in the door each date after work. My most recent place I have done some painting and it really makes a difference.
What does bungalow mean in this context? This is clearly a bachelor suite. I've always thought a bungalow is a single story small house with a detatched garage, that is what a bungalow is locally. So is this a suite in a house?
Very nicely done btw.
Premier soothing space. Very nice
When I first saw the "after" I thought the photos were swapped. The after looks too busy for me. I'm not a minimalist by any stretch, but visually I thought I was looking into a basement storage area. But I love small spaces and everything we all do to make them work.
I agree with Gooddog, it does seem cluttered... Maybe it's the shelf that make it seem so busy. As small space like that would have benefit from litter color pallets.
