My room makeover::
My husband and I purchased our home in December 2014 and tackled the entire house (or as much as we could accomplish) for one month before moving into it in February 2015. As you can see in the before photo, the house was a classic "South Philly grandma" abode and we knew we were taking on a massive fixer-upper project...The process for remaking this room involved removing drop ceilings, chipping off plaster walls to reveal exposed brick, stripping wallpaper and repairing the walls underneath prior to painting, ripping up carpets to reveal beautiful original hardwood floors (with an inlay!), refinishing said floors ourselves, installing a new ceiling with new lighting and a fan, and then painting and furnishing the final results. The rug is from West Elm, the couch was an amazing Craigslist find (half price West Elm!), the small loveseat is a Craigslist Ikea find with new cushion covers from ComfortWorks, the coffee table was handmade by my husband, and curtains are from Target.
My makeover advice::
Do the messy/toxic work when you aren't living in the house! We exposed the brick walls and refinished the hardwood floors during the month when we weren't yet moved in. Exposing the brick covered everything in thick brick dust - the room looked like a coal mine on Mars. We also kept the carpets installed as long as possible, to protect the hardwood floors underneath while we worked on the rest of the room. Another bit of advice is to double the amount of time you think the project will take. Nothing goes as smoothly or quickly as planned! Also, the recessed lighting makes an incredible difference! The day that the lights were installed was such an exciting one, as the room instantly felt transformed.
What I love most about my new space::
We love the exposed brick, the hardwood floors, the lighting, and the overall feel of the room. We're aiming for a modern, warm look and a place to showcase our favorite artwork, books, and my husband's sculptures. Everyone who has seen the room from the beginning of the project comments how drastic the change has been and we can't agree more!
