- My room makeover::
- When I bought this house, the last time the kitchen had been renovated was in the 1980s. My boyfriend and I tackled nearly this entire renovation on our own, and we did not want to spend a lot of money. Thus, we didn't change the floor plan of the kitchen at all - we just gave it all a facelift. We pulled the linoleum off the floors and laid down luxury vinyl tile instead. The cabinets are from IKEA, with non-standard hardware. We also added a bank of drawers and a second counter between the stove and the fridge - that was empty space before. I traded in the double sink for one, deep, stainless steel sink. We also installed a dishwasher and a new fridge, both of which I got on clearance. I loved the arabesque mission tile company tiles and managed to find something similar at Lowes for a fraction of the price. The only thing we didn't do ourselves was install the granite countertops. The total cost for the entire renovation was about $7000 - and that includes appliances.
- My makeover advice::
- Go for it! I thought that I couldn't have an amazing kitchen reno on a smaller budget, but it can happen. The biggest thing is to be a smart shopper - I got all of my appliances on clearance by being like a ninja and snapping them up just as new models were about to hit the floors.
- What I love most about my new space::
- The dishwasher. I lived for 13 years in places without a dishwasher - being able to run a dishwasher is such a luxury. I also love the brightness of the space - the beige and rusty red colors were really drab.
