- My room makeover::
- This renovation/make-over was a super successful collaboration between my wife Carroll and myself. We had moved from an older traditional home to this newer one and felt it had little or no character - particularly in the kitchen. First thing we did, even before we actually moved in, was to dismantle and remove the existing kitchen cabinets in a careful manner so we could donate them. Concurrently we planned a completely new kitchen, already having decided that an IKEA kitchen would provide the best value and be the quickest to complete. However, we messed the IKEA design staff up completely by insisting we combine two different cabinetry models - the lower base cabinets in black (Laxarby) and the upper cabinets (Filipstad) in a rich chocolate woodgrain finish. All in all from start to finish it took us about 4 weeks. We kept the existing ceramic tile floor and selected new wall tiles from Olympia Tile. The kitchen appliances are from IKEA.....quartz counter is from Extreme Granite.
- My makeover advice::
- As is always the case, plan carefully....we moved from a kitchen at least twice as large. Carroll spent many hours calculating the exact storage requirements for table linens, glassware, and ancillary storage. And, always err on the side of simplicity - do not over-complicate a small space with distracting elements or design details.
- What I love most about my new space::
- Although small (intimate) the centre island block allows for friends to congregate around comfortably, to be a part of the 'foodie' goings-on (I'm a passionate home cook).....coupled with the new gas service we installed for our 5 burner gas range. Plus, most everything is literally within arms' reach.....one has to take very few steps in the preparation of a complex meal.
