My room makeover::
I moved back toNew York in March of this year. I had previously lived here for school but i have been working abroad for the last 4 years. I had zero furniture but I knew i wanted to create a space that reflected my travels and tied it to my preference for easy California living. I am beyond lucky for the talents of my friend and old NYC roommate Gregory (who is submitting a kitchen makeover) who designed my living room with me keeping a 'Damascus meets Cali' vibe. Everyone who knows me says without him I would have no idea what to do. We lucked out with the semi annual sale at ABC carpet outlet and got our big items there; rugs, large side chair, and coffee table. Couch is from Crate and Barrel, and a lot of the other furniture is from CB2. We styled with knick knacks from dwell, DWR, Room and Board, and added special items from my travels.
My makeover advice::
I would recommend thinking about what makes your style your own. My friend asked me so many questions that I had no idea what the answer was. We took a lot of time touring stores, thrift shops, and looking at Apartment Therapy. It was amazing when I got a baseline and was able to understand the difference between style, taste, and materials!
What I love most about my new space::
In the end, we got a lot of pieces from big stores like CB2 but my most cherished piece is the metallic coffee table. I will keep it forever! It was the first piece that Gregory picked out and everything fell together to match it. I love how calm it is and what a sense of home that we created for the apartment. My favorite compliment is hearing that it doesn't feel like another generic glass monolith apartment - it has style!
