- My room makeover::
- Fortunately I started with a new home build family room with great natural light and high ceilings. The challenge was transforming a white box into a comfortable, inviting room with personality. I knew I wanted the room to feel light and airy, taking advantage of all the natural light. I also wanted to keep it modern. It started with the sectional. The room is 17’ long and I wanted a substantial sofa to fill the space. After a lot of searching I decided to have the sectional custom made. It's just over 10’ wide and the coveted chaise is over 4’ wide! Next was the fireplace and mantel. The builder had a niche to the right of the fireplace where a built-in should have gone which would have required the TV to go over the fireplace. We did not want this so to make the fireplace and TV look like one design feature I had a 10 foot custom walnut mantel made to connect the areas. Last, I layered color and personality with a gallery wall, textiles and accessories for a modern and cheerful look.
- My makeover advice::
- Space plan! Without doing a little of planning in advance I wouldn't have been comfortable ordering such a large custom sectional. It was also helpful for figuring out what scale the rest of the furniture would have to be or how much space I would have for moving around the room. Secondly, sketch out your ideas on paper. Without drawing out my vision of the fireplace and mantel I wouldn't have been able to really know if my design would work or to communicate well with my contractor.
- What I love most about my new space::
- I absolutely love the sofa and so does everyone who comes over! Because it is extra long and extra deep, it is so comfortable, fits a lot of people, and just invites you to sit down and relax. Getting it custom made allowed me to choose a fabric and style that was still streamlined and wouldn't get too frumpy or tattered over time. This light filled room has become one of my favorites in the house!
