- My room makeover::
- My duplex apartment was in very poor condition when I viewed it for the first time, but I knew after taking one look at the built in cabinets that it had a ton of potential. The first thing I did was rip out the stained, red carpet and paint over the wallpaper. The original hardwood floors weren't in the best shape, but a vast improvement over the carpet. Most of the furniture and accessories were thrifted over a long period of time. I found the dining room table at the Indiana University Surplus store for $50, the Bertoia barstool was $25 at a resale shop, and the artwork is by family and friends. The Eames knock off chairs were purchased at Overstock and the rug at World Market. I think a mix of old, new and vintage keeps a room balanced.
- My makeover advice::
- Though it's tempting to purchase everything for a room at once, it pays off to slowly make purchases after living in your space for awhile. For the longest time our family of 5 ate at a tiny 3ftx3ft table until we found an affordable table that could accommodate all of us and our multitude of art and school projects.
- What I love most about my new space::
- I love that the dining room is the space in our home that most reflects who we are as a family. Not only do we use it for meal times, but it functions as a play room for my youngest daughter, houses all of our games and art supplies and serves as a home office.
