My room makeover::
I'd recently bought my house as a "short-sale," with idea to convert the garage into an ADU for my aging-in-place father. My budget was small... too small! The lowest quote I got was for converting my garage into an ADU was $40K. The most expensive was over $75K. I re-evaluated my immediate needs and decided to simply create more living space by turning the garage into a creative office space/guest living space. The entire process took one LONG and STEADY month, with most of the work done by myself and a friend. I had electrical, siding, and roofing done by professionals (and was done as a part of my overall house overhaul). It's hard to give an "exact" cost, due to the components that were part of the overall repair, but I *can* say that the garage conversion cost approximately $20K to do myself... WELL under what the lowest bid was (which would have included myself and friend STILL doing a lot of the labor).
My makeover advice::
Plan in advance! I talked to a lot of contractors... discussing my future plans for the garage. Because of that, I knew special wiring for the mini-split A/C I would eventually install. Additionally, know your city's ordinances and building codes! Using the correct drywall on certain walls could mean the difference between passing an inspection and having to do the work all over again... costing time AND money. Finally, know that... as a do-it-yourselfer... you're going to have to make concessions. I'm okay with the small imperfections, especially knowing I built it myself and saved money for OTHER much-needed house repairs!
What I love most about my new space::
I love having a creative space away from the house. It also serves as a movie-watching area and general "quiet space" when things get to cramped in the house. Finally, I have a lovely, comfortable, and private space for guests to stay when they visit.
