When I think of refinishing a vintage piece of furniture, I think sanding, staining or possibly a coat of fresh paint. But if you let your creative juices flow, you might come up with something fantastic like this:

Look at the impact of a little bit of paint and wallpaper. This works great with a dresser because each drawer gets its own unique treatment. I'd probably be reluctant to do this to a nice vintage piece but the result looks fantastic.

Commercial Flour Sa...
eek! I liked this wayyy better in the before photo. Maybe if I saw the whole room, I might like it better.
I liked it better before as well but I am guessing the finish/veneer was too shaby close up to save.
I like it! I'm hoping to refinish a dresser and some bookcases this summer and I think you just provided me with some inspiration. Thanks!
I think this is adorable. So fun and cheerful. I am too lazy to complete such a project, however.
I am ALL for fun project & salvaging and creating fun pieces. BUT this is not a piece that should have been re-done...on oh. This is a Danish teak dresser that just needed a light sanding & some teak oil. Not a cheap veneer dresser. I own a vintage modern furniture store & this makes me pout. This is most likely a designer piece...Peter Hvidt or something, I just cannot put my finger on it. But I guess at the end of the day this is their piece & they can do what they will ;)
Me? I'd say leave the hacking for IKEA furniture. That dresser looked like a sleek and sophisticated midcentury piece I'd have been HONORED to own... but all trolloped up like that it looks like the owner was ashamed of it.
But, to each his own!
Noooooooooo!
I'm all about painting your furniture, windows or whatever but when it comes to mid-century pieces it's a big no-no for me. If you don't like mid century stuff, please sale it.
I don't consider any furniture to be sacred, but that was a beautiful dresser to begin with. The beautiful grain, the recessed pulls...oh my. So, I can't say that I like this transformation one iota. I'm not angry about it. Just disappointed. The finished product looks cheap and dated. Reminds me of the gross seventies-era contac paper covered pieces I see all the time at the thrift stores.
I prefer the "before" photo. =(
i like both the before and after. cute and creative. is it just me though or does any piece of furniture look so much cooler on a white wood floor?
i love it! it's sort of a vintage feel to it still, i love the colors and retro patterns
that was such a beautiful piece - too bad they covered it up like that. Normally I like the befores and afters, but this one is sad.
:( loved it in the before.
sad sad sad. sigh
Blasphemy!
Oh no! It was such a beautiful dresser before. If I found this piece on craigslist, I'd be running to the atm to snap it right it up.
In this case, less is more.
Makes me so sad. :(
Sorry.
They ruined it!! Why would you do that?? It was a perfectly gorgeous danish/MCM dresser before...should have just sanded and stained it... :(
I cringed when I saw the after. This is furniture abuse! It was lovely, now it looks like junk. Ok for a childs room I suppose, but nothing else!!
oh my goodness.. I'm going to have to agree with the loved it before crowd.. and when I went to see how they had it in the room (even though I understood not a word of the blog) I liked it even less...
I love it! I think it compliments the rest of her decor wonderfully, something the original piece definitely wouldn't have done. The person who did it lives in Norway and Danish teak wood furniture is pretty common at their flea markets so the original piece is same-o, same-o for her. She's probably be more excited over a target vase then another piece of teak. Cultural understanding definitely plays a part in appreciating the finished piece.
The transformation of the dresser makes it look so young, energetic and fresh. I think the new dresser would be perfect for a child’s room. Having each drawer a different color is creating a fun way for kids to organize their clothes and belongings. Can’t wait to try this out on some old furniture sitting around!
I agree, it looked way better before. It was a beautiful mid-century modern piece of furniture and now it looks like every other IKEA dresser. Glueing wallpaper to furniture has become so common now, people really should think twice before doing it.
Plus, I think parents should give their kids some credit. I bet most kids can appreciate the real value of a beautiful, valuable piece of furniture without it being painted or wallpapered to excess. They're no idiots.
you destroyed it!!!!!!!!! :(
Nice before but really love it after. In the context of the room this might really be an enhancement. Stylistically it is much more light and playful which is likely more consistent with the owners vibe.
Eeek. I don't care much for MCM & I believe you should do what you want to your furniture, but the 'after' just screams CHEAP. Maybe if you had painted it white or that lovely blue instead of leaving the wood it would look better.
Oh why...?
I have the EXACT same dresser which i've found in the garbage already painted with a horrible acrylic paint, each drawer was painted in another color and i hated it. i sanded it for a week, praying i could make it look like your "before" photo, but it just didn't go like i wanted, so i painted it over in a minty color (something like the first drawer in the "after" photo), which made it gorgeous and very mid-century, but not pleasing as it's original stunning stain.
BUT, who am i to judge, it's your piece, and it's cute like that as well. Enjoy it!
