I wish I had seen this hack back when I was desperately looking for something to put in front of my sofa. I was looking for something bright and glamorous and not too ornate, but with a bit of gold to pick up the lamps and mirrors. Krys Melo at IKEA Hackers was looking for something similar and found the perfect solution in a set of IKEA VITTSJÖ nesting tables.
She took the larger table from the VITTSJÖ nesting table set, spray painted the frame a pretty gold, then drilled holes in the MDF bottom shelf for the tufting buttons to go through.
Then it was a simple matter of using 2" foam and bright green velvet to upholster the tabletop and tuft it with matching buttons. The MDF shelf swapped places with the glass tabletop, which made an excellent lower shelf. (I love the way the pink flowers go with the green upholstery.)
The new ottoman is fantastic, especially considering that it's a pretty simple weekend project that doesn't even require any special equipment, beyond an ordinary drill.
She still has the smaller nesting table left over, and I’m pretty excited to see what she does with it.
