Architect Jerri Holan completely transformed the nine-foot-square kitchen in her 1930 Spanish Colonial Revival bungalow in Albany (California). It was originally dark, dreary, and cramped, but after she removed doors, opened up a wall, scaled down and rearranged appliances, and changed windows...

...the result is a light and airy space that feels bigger, although the footprint remains the same.

I saw this isn the magazine everal weeks ago - This is a beautiful and appropriate update for this house.
Wow, this is so simple but lovely and totally appropriate for a California bungalow.
Uh, no thanks to the mustard-yellow tiles.
But otherwise, it's nice.
Love it. Really beautiful.
The tiles are fabulous and so appropriate for this type of home. It really adds that 30s/Spanish feel to the space and in contrast with the stark whiteness of everything else, creates warmth. Lovely!
Stunner! Thank god not another granite and stainless vision of boredom. Love the color and light fixture.
That is not a SMALL kitchen. a small kitchen is SMALL. literally. LOL
I agree Yolanda P, I don't consider that small (before or after.) But there's also something wrong in the description. Nine square feet is only 3' x 3'. The length of the wall the sink is on is at least 8' or 9' alone. Oops!
I liked the 'before' better.
And home body, they meant 9' x 9', which isn't small.
thanks for sharing this kitchen. It's not what I would have done but I might not have known what I like so well if people didn't put their work up!
i dont really liek that mustard color they used. i love that color - but just not for tiles. it looks dated. and not in a good way.
The faucet is fantastic! Did you maintain the old one, or get a new one?
nicer. but tiled counters still hurt my eyes.
Hmmm... I'm trying to figure out what I don't like about this, because in general I like white cabinets and I like yellow tile. I think it might be the blue stripe in the tile, but even more, I think it might be the gold grout. I think white grout might brighten it up and make the gold less jarring.
