When we moved halfway across the country to our current home we left most of our furniture behind. Most of it had been hand-me-downs that we appreciated while my husband was in grad school but that we didn't love or care to relocate.
While we had grand plans of a completely decking out our new home in a matter of days, reality hit us when we soon discovered the host of home problems that needed to be addressed (and paid for!) upon our arrival — a failing plumbing system, poor insulation, security issues, etc.
There was also the issue of picking out things that we both liked. In general my husband loves neutral, uncluttered, traditional masculine spaces, and I like my rooms to be more airy and whimsical. However, we both agreed that we wanted it feel rustic and relaxed. We wanted to make sure that we both loved every major piece we bought…so the room remained nearly empty for months! "Filler" pieces had to be borrowed from other rooms, not purchased unless we really loved them for the room long term.
Slowly, ever. so. slowly., our vision emerged, and though we still tweak corners of the room every week from time to time, the basics of the room are finally in place!
Changes:
Aside from new furniture, lighting, and accessories, changes included…
• Painting the walls. We painted before we moved in, and if I had waited I might have chosen a different color since the color we chose requires that the other room accents carry all the weight, making for a very slow decorating process. When we moved in the walls were an icy white, which made the room feel stark and chilly since we have very limited natural light due to the mature trees surrounding our house. We chose a warmer shade, Benjamin Moore's Linen White, which changes throughout the day from ivory, to light yellow, to an almost peachy color, but never feels cold.
• Painting the stair risers and fireplace white. The orange-y brick was covered in soot, weighed down the room, and hogged a lot of attention. The same held true for the stair risers which clashed with the floorboards as well as with the wood furniture we had. They were the first things you noticed when walking into the room, and competing with their visual weight was tough. Painting them instantly lifted the weightiness of the room, and gave us a black canvas to work with.
• Switching from lace valances, to woven shades, to curtain panels. We knew the lace valances from the previous owner would have to go, but it took us awhile to decide on the right type of window treatment. In the end we went with panels, which are really just painters drop cloth pinch pleated using curtain clip rings. I spray painted silver curtain rods from another room black. The curtains give the room more height, and probably made the biggest difference in making the room feel "finished."
To all of you in the "slowly evolving room" boat, hang in there! It's worth it to end up with things you really love.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
Wow! I love this!!
A lovely (and much-needed) reminder that a beautiful and functional home doesn't just come together overnight.
I particularly love how the dog brings out the rich brown tones of the chair in that last "after" photo.
Really nice, casual space. That's a really cool sconce/swinging light above the couch. Anyone know where it's from?
PLEASE tell me where you got that lamp. Please?? :)
Please tell me where you got that couch!
This is a great article, I know how anxious I've been that my rooms haven't just come together overnight and I have to constantly remind myself that it takes time.
Please tell me where to get those awesome wall lamps. I've never felt this way about a lamp before.
Love the coffee table and lamp stands!
My living room currently has a plastic table, 2 wicker lawn chairs and FINALLY we got a sofa and chair (after 6 months)
This makes me feel better. I keep thinking that I want to submit my house for a House Tour, but "it's not finished yet". Sigh.
Think I found the sconce. From Restoration Hardware:
http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1676238&categoryId=cat1701019
JonJD - The sconce is Restoration Hardware's Train Station Swing Arm sconce, and its awesome. Everything I fell in love before was waaaaay out of price range. The light this gives off is warm and not too harsh.
adria- did you mean the sconce? The floor lamp is from the pottery barn outlet, I think it's the pharmacy lamp. The side table lamp base is from target, the shade was a diy that I'll be posting on sometime over the next few weeks.
sarrazak - it came from Urban Retreat, which is awesome, completely affordable esp for customizable pieces. I did a post on them last year for AT
"...just painters drop cloth pinch pleated using curtain clip rings." - I am *so* stealing that!
Some of you might like one I did - I have a double window in the living room of a little Atomic Ranch. I wanted something to dress up the top of the window (to hide the top of the venetian blinds) but wanted a modern feel, rather than traditional or fabric (cat fur collector).
I ran across a bamboo table runner at Target. Nabbed it. Got MDF cut at Home Depot to approximate a valance box, assembled and mounted the box with L-brackets.
I attached the runner to the box with velcro tape. I do need to re-work the velcro gig because the runner has a foam backing that tore under its own weight, but the look is pretty cool.
I really like the idea behind this post (and the post itself !).
Decorating doesn't happen overnight. I really like that you didn't put any "filler" piece. I follow the exact same strategy in our house (bought a year ago and still under heavy renovation): better have an empty space that a piece you don't like or "will replace later" - because I never ever replaced such a piece.
And you room is gorgeous !
I am in awe of your use of painter's tarps :) Genius!
very nice advertisement for delayed gratification...the afters are great.
I did however like the old window above the fireplace in a "during" picture.
More is more.
I completely relate to this post about not being able to do everything at once and have been taking photos since the day I moved in. It's fun to look back and see a timeline, if you will, of the growth your place place takes on as well as style.
In some ways, I like the fact that I've been forced to only buy and do things at baby steps. It gives me plenty of time to do research, mess with photoshop and virtualize how things could look.
Since everyone here has good taste, what do you think? http://tinyurl.com/472uocp
This is the kind of room I love to spend time in. It is fresh, light, and yet oh so comfortable.
Great post. Love the after.
I feel like I live in a perpetual state of "during."
very nice...i am currently stuck in during (or maybe it's before?) and it's nice to see that there is hope for me yet! i am quite enamoured of your woody side table, can you share some info on that piece? thanks!
What a great redo; so many useful tips. Congratulations on achieving a beautiful and comfortable space.
nickety- the side tables are from target. They aren't available at the moment, but I've noticed that they bring them back from time to time so I'd check in every once in a while.
The coffee table is Crate and Barrel's Seguro
Very very nice. You can totally tell you didn't rush - each piece has a purpose and it all flows together wonderfully! It seems that you have perfectly incorporated both of your styles. It's very balanced -Excellent job!
Beautiful job on the room!
Off topic, but I see that you have a Rhodesian Ridgeback. My husband and I are thinking about getting one. How do you like the breed?
I kind of liked the spareness of the "during" but it looks great finished. Not fake or stagey, just light and fresh but still cozy and welcoming. For how much stuff ended up in there, it still doesn't look cluttery, because everything seems thoughtfully chosen.
Informative and well-written, with great, explanatory photos, useful tips——and a wonderful result! This is everything an A.T. post should be. Good job on this, and your space!
Fun post, pretty home. I like that there's so much wood and the color green.
Looks better with more clutter....oddly enough....could live without the dead animal on the floor....it's so gross....some poor animals skin??? Reminds me of that movie where the pyscho skinned his victims.....
@SonAli: Ridgebacks are awesome dogs. Very intelligent and athletic and playful. Generally great with other dogs and with people. Best if you have a yard and/or can take them out for good exercise because (like people) they can get wide as they age if they don't get enough exercise. I've fostered them for years and think they're excellent dogs :-)
oh, the room looks good too. i'd like a little more editing, and i agree about the animal skin rug being 'ew' but it does look really nice and i love that you posted the 'during' photos! thanks!
SonAli- yes, cctax is right about ridgebacks. They are awesome dogs, super loyal, and very very intelligent.
A few things I wish someone had told me before we got her:
-she's more like a person than a dog in that she needs a lot of attention...like almost as much as my kids.
-she is A LOT of dog and her tail is no joke, it's like a whip and will knock things off side tables. Also everything is within snout range, even food on the counter and even though we are consistent with her when it comes to correcting, she will still take any opportunity to steal food on the sly if nobody's around.
-they need a lot of exercise everyday, but once they've had it they are content lazing around most of the day. A walk doesn't cut it though, she needs a fast run everyday.
-they are SUPER protective. Ours will go crazy on strangers, not letting them get between her and my little kids. People cross the street when she's in the front yard because she's intimidating.
-she doesn't bark unless there's a good reason (really nice)
And that's my novel on ridgebacks! Awesome dogs if you you have the time and energy.
Cctax and LeahDC, thank you for the feedback. We are very much dachshund people but wanted to get a large breed when we build our new place. We will have 9 acres so we could really have space to exercise a Ridgeback. I think you guys sold me. Thanks again!
Beautiful, Leah! Really love the painting and light fixture.
@SonAli - consider getting 2 -watching 2 ridgebacks at play is more entertaining than just about anything else on the planet. the bowing & mouth-wrestling is classic...

Leah, did you make the shelf in the corner or buy it? I'm looking for reclaimed wood shelves for my bedroom and like the look of yours in the 3rd photo. I've seen something similar in Pottery Barn, but it only comes in one length - which is too long for my space.
great job blending both of your styles. painting the stair risers made a huge difference for such a simple change. the more i look at this the more i like it!
Absolutely beautiful "after". My own personal style leans more MCM, but I love rooms like this that feel light but still lived-in, especially with the organic touches.
Well done! Gorgeous pooch - it is a ridgeback?
Congrats, the room feels very cozy and comfy.
Well done. Your room turned out very beautiful! Enjoy!
I love the room! Can you tell me where you found the wall decal?
Beautiful Ridgeback! What's his name? I used to live with a gorgeous ridgeback called Otis. He needed a 6 mile run on the beach twice a day. And you never wore him out, only made him fitter!
I just love your living room. I have a close-up of your finished mantle on my pin board. I loved the painting so much that I bought a t-shirt of the same look just so I could have something similar. Great job!
My space is very much in the 'during' phase. I've only been in the condo for less than 2 months, and had almost no furniture to speak of upon moving in besides a bed, dresser and desk. I get frustrated with not having everything done and comfortable, but the budget is what it is, and when you are working from scratch, it never goes as far as you hope!
Love the tall, beachy side tables and the wonderfully heavy looking coffee table.
The rug under it however.. creepy!
