Everyone loves a photo booth, but not many enjoy paying the high rental fees that these booths cost to rent for special events like weddings. If you are short on $$ but high on creativity, check out these fantastic DIY examples of event perfect photo booths.
Heads and tails above some of the other photo booths we've seen, primarily because it's shaped like a camera (and who doesn't like that), is this project from Instructables user LetMeBeFranks. LetMeBeFranks is not surprisingly an interaction designer and it's easy to see why with the level of creativity in this project.
The total build cost for this photo booth was around $150 because many of the materials were found in the garage. The brain of the whole operation is OS X Lion which runs on a laptop connected to an external monitor. Halogen lights from IKEA supply additional lighting and the "Easy" button from Staples is what users push to operate the photo booth.
While we are disappointed LetMeBeFranks did not incorporate a printer so guests could take their images home, we imagine it would not be complicated to add into the equation.

Other great ideas for photo booths can be found in the reader comments on this post. One of these ideas includes using an Ubuntu machine and 4x6 photo printer for another budget friendly option. Instructables also has some more photo booth projects like this one from Dohjoe and this one from MoonRaker.
