There are sites catering to those seeking to exchange homes for periods of time between seniors, academics, and even between those sharing the same faith. I recently discovered, and applied to, a site connecting vacation home swaps specifically for designers and visual artists and discovered a wealth of dream destinations both near and far...
Behomm claims to be the "first site to exchange homes for vacations only for designers and visual artists", requiring a vetting out process and serving specific creative professions (here's a screencap of the list of acceptable professions). The site is a by-invite-only affair, connecting people from around the globe sharing similar tastes and appreciation for thoughtfully decorated spaces to swap homes for free for a long weekend or up to a month...Behomm members decide amongst themselves, the site working as an introductory middleman.
I applied by sharing a few details about myself, uploading a handful of photos of our 1 bedroom here in Los Angeles. A few minutes later I received a personalized response from Eva Calduch and Agusti Juste, cofounders of Behomm, welcoming me to take a peek behind the virtual velvet rope.
The quality and diversity of properties listed is a bit humbling for a renter like myself, as our quaint Silver Lake apartment paled in comparison to the stunning catalog of architect self-designed homes and stunning villas situated amongst European countrysides. But mixed in amongst the more luxurious options were several more modestly appointed, yet always well decorated, spaces from around the globe which I could imagine myself comfortably swapping.
The catch is full membership requires paying either 35 euros for a 6 month trial (about $46), or 95 euros for 1 year (a little over $124). Behomm donates 5% of each membership to Architecture for Humanity
, an appropriate bit of philanthropy related to the realm of design and designers. All the legal details are here to peruse
if your interest is piqued.
If you're someone in the creative field with an itch for traveling, the site could be a worthy expenditure, since you know the person coming to your home shares your appreciation (and likely a similar respect) for interior spaces and personal belongings. I have 15 days to decide whether I want to pay to become a member, but for now I'm happy to simply window shop dream destinations from here to New Zealand.
