I admit, I tend to be one of those people who only comments or writes reviews when I have a horrible experience. And, unfortunately, I find bad customer service is becoming more and more common these days. I like to think I don't harp on the negative; I'm always ready to praise excellent service and give glowing recommendations to friends. But for some reason, I feel I'm more likely to recant the bad than remember the good. Is this just me? But this time around, my story is all good and I'm sharing it with the world.
Some of you might remember my bathroom renovation a few months back. The clock that was hanging in the corner garnered many comments, most concerning the placement of the clock, not the actual design. That clock is the 1856 Zinc Wall Clock by Bengt Ek Design, one of two in my house. Weird timing (pun intended), but shortly after sharing my redo, the one located in my kitchen came crashing to the floor. It could have been because of a faulty hanging job or perhaps the metal band holding the glass in place popped off — either way it was now glassless and I was left feeling quite sad about my favorite clock.
On a whim, I decided to contact the company and see if they had extra clock parts or could repair it. Within a few days, I received a sweet email from TherĂ©se saying they would check in the office for replacement parts. Shortly later, another email arrived stating they had found the parts and would ship it out to me a.s.a.p. I was never asked to pay the international shipping cost and when the package arrived, imagine my surprise when I opened it and found a brand new clock! All I can say is this is the kind of customer service that goes above and beyond any that one could expect. From my first sent email until the clock arrived, the whole process took less than a month. I would have gladly paid for the parts and the shipping, the fact that I didn't does not go unnoticed! Bottom line — it is this type of service that truly sets a company apart from its competitors and convinces me there are many great companies out there being run by exceptional people.
In case you aren't familiar with Bengt Ek Design, here is their brief backstory. Swedish designer Bengt Ek left his homeland for Switzerland in 1975 and, along with his father, founded Bengt Ek Design. They have products ranging from clocks and scales to thermometers and shoe racks. You can find their products in leading design shops as well as museums such as MoMA. The brand's mission has always been to represent quality, functionality, innovation and service. My hat's off to you, Bengt Ek Design!

Aww, I love hearing great customer service stories like this. The clock is great in its simplicity. Very nice.
For what it's worth, I think it's a good thing to write reviews — positive and negative. As a consumer (primarily an online consumer at that), I rely heavily on reviews. So good or bad, it helps me in my decision-making process to read others' feedback on a product/retailer. Just somethin’ to think about is all.
Great story. Sometimes when I get wonderful customer service on the phone, I ask to speak to their supervisor just to tell them what a wonderful job that person it doing. I know the calls get monitored, but like you said...people don't remember the good stuff so we have to tell them.
ps: amazing clock
Those clocks are *gorgeous*!
Gorgeous stuff, too!
Those are beautiful clocks! Always nice to hear about a company that provides good service.
I have to second Polly S - seems like the typos and grammatical errors around here have gotten worse lately.
Anyone know where I could buy one of these? It doesn't appear they have any retailers in the US. It would look amazing in my new kitchen! :)
giftable, I searched (I want one too!) and found them here:

did you tell them that you blog for apartment therapy?
I have the clock and timer combo (last picture). It's good to know that customer service is stellar if I ever need it. I've had the clock and timer for 15 years now, and they still work perfectly.
Don't you just want to climb to a large cliff and yell it to the world when you get good customer service? WEll I guess you did do that by blogging about it on here. That clock is classic looking. REminds me of the clocks in my school when I was growing up.
House Voyeur - YES! I think bad customer service is becoming so common that it makes great service a wonderful, rare gem!
roybot - No, I never threw out there who I blog for.
reginamonster - I agree 100% and I rely all the time on online reviews. Unfortunately, I tend to rarely write them :( Something to work on!
I have the combo Clock/Timer I was thinking of parting with if Giftable or Deelw or anyone else is interested. I'm in NY and just moved and don't have a great place for it anymore.
Hey, alecias. If you still have the clock/timer, I'm interested. Would you be willing to mail to NC? Thanks.
That is wonderfully, fabulously amazing. I'm in customer service and it not only benefits the customer when they receive this kind of service, it benefits the provider too - karma, word of mouth and the feeling knowing you just done good.
Hi all! I love, love, LOVE this clock! Another site that carries these and several other Bengt Ek items is Upriver Home, http://www.upriverhome.com. The link to the clock above is http://upriverhome.com/1690.html. They're based in the US, ship very quickly, and have very reasonable prices. I've bought from them several times and have always had a great experience. Hope that this helps anyone who is looking for it.
