Surry Hills — Sydney, NSW, Australia
I bought my apartment on Foster Street in Surry Hills over three years ago and have lived there ever since. I now share the space with my girlfriend. No specific design inspirations, although I did fall in love with mid-century classics a little while ago. Unfortunately this happened after I had already aquired the majority of my furniture! Oh well, one piece at a time, right?
I also enjoy browsing interior design sites (predominantly Apartment Therapy) to find little ideas that I can implement around the place.
Style wise I like neat and orderly, but one that also looks lived in and not like a showroom. Personality needs to shine through - I feel that a home without books and records on display isn't really a home at all. I'm also a big fan of mixing real art with your own creations. All the framed photographs around the place were taken by myself.
Problems? Getting plants to stay alive! Natural light is minimal in this apartment due to how built up the street is. That said we do get some lovely morning sun over the kitchen table. That and I've also found some species of house plants that appear impervious to my black thumb. Another problem has been getting hobbies to fit in. DJ'ing takes up a large amount of space, but fortunately I was able to find a digital solution to that problem which packs away neatly when I'm not using it.
As with any home, this is a work in progress, but for the first time in over three years of living there I feel that it's 'mostly done'.
