Q: Other than popular branded stores such as Ikea, Pier One, Crate and Barrel, West Elm, etc — What would you say are the best shops in the NYC area for mid to budget range furniture? Both contemporary furniture and traditional lines.

@Jmack1 - Room and Board is a great place, but I wouldn't consider it mid- to budget. It's not really in the same budget range as West Elm, Ikea, Crate and Barrel, etc. Crate and Barrel furniture can be as expensive as Room and Board, but the difference is, Crate and Barrel will at least have some budget to mid-range priced items whereas accessories like throw pillows at Room and Board start at $50.
CB2 -- it's like a cheaper version of Crate and Barrel. Also, Macy's actually has some nice stuff (not everything, but some). We got a gorgeous couch there for $800, which is actually not much more than you'd spend on a totally shitty IKEA couch. Plus free delivery.
ABC outlet / DWR warehouse in NJ always have great stuff.
CB2; crate & Barrel Outlet in NJ, ABC Home Outlet in Bronx; Bo Concept; allmodernfurniture.com or any of the CSN sites; Brocade; Target has some decent finds.
There's always Housing Works and Furnish Green. Might be a little rustic for your tastes, but quite reasonable...
I second the Gothic Cabinet. Our bed from there is solid, and looks great. Simple, but in the best way.
Nadeau is nice too, but I wouldn't call it reasonable for furniture. It also has a very specific aesthetic. I bought something there, and its beautiful, but they're limited to mostly tables & desks.
Furnish Green in Herald Square is my favorite best-kept-secret in New York. They specialize in restoring and refreshing furniture. I have found several one of a kind pieces that are my absolute favorites from them.
They are located at 1261 Broadway, 5th Floor, just below Herald Square between 30th and 31st streets. You can reach themat (917) 583-9051 or furnishgreen@gmail.com
ABC outlet for sure.
I go to the one in NJ and like twice a year, they send out a coupon for extra 15% off.
We bought some any pieces of great furniture from there...like solid wood french barn dining table with extra extentions...made in France for like $800.
a really nice desk for about $600...i've seen a same desk at a designer building for 3 times of that price.
There are so many quality furnitures at great prices..not cheap but for what you get, i consider them great prices.
Furnish Green is great...we've gotten several items from them and are happy with our purchases. Nicest folks and negotiable in pricing. I do feel their prices have gone up, though...
Everything Goes Furniture on Staten Island is a great used furniture store. http://www.etgstores.com/furniture/index.html
I have to second suggesting Nadeau. I found them last year in Texas, visiting my parents. I can't believe they opened in New York. Everything is made of solid, heavy wood--the designs are unique and beautiful--and the prices are half what they charge at Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, etc. It's a very cool resource.
CB2- Crate and Barrel's modern home furniture store. Clean and modern furniture that you can actually live with and in. Mix and match furniture and accessories.
Alexandra Abuza Home and Garden at Brooklyn flea, 1 Hanson Place, the old Williamsburg Savings Bank she has the best selection of vintage/industrial/collectible finds for the New York apt, look for her in the mezzanine. Also Dailymemorandum in the vault.
Film biz recycling in park slope. They get stuff from movie sets so you never know what kind of cool stuff you will find. Www.filmbizrecycling.org
Also build it green in Astoria is great and they have furniture and building supplies if your a diy er... All reclaimed. I got an awesome table that was in columbia univ library originally for fourth bucks there! Www.bignyc.org
Housing Works, you have to look more often, but they have gems.
Like several folks have said, I second Housing Works -- not only do they have a variety of stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn where you can search for hidden treasures, but *every dime* you spend there goes to support Housing Works' advocacy around homlessness and HIV/AIDS prevention.
PS: see http://www.housingworks.org/
Also, their annual Design on a Dime event with celeb designers serves as their major fundraiser:

The Door Store! Has good modern and traditional furniture pieces - sofas, leather club chairs, etc. I know there are a few but I remember one on 33rd/Park Ave S. Yikes - just went to find the link and see they are closing. I'll bet you could get really good prices now... http://www.doorstorefurniture.com/
I came across an amazing spot in the Bronx...so amazing I was hesitant to post! It's called AA Furniture. Address is 400 east 180th street, on the corner of Webster avenue. They have so much amazing real wood furniture...some with official company seals & stamps on the insides of drawers. Their number is 718-220-4597 & 646-281-5419. I plan on getting two dressers for $550...& a trunk coffee table for $100. Trust me it's worth the hike!
