We lack a fireplace in our apartment, and so we had candles lit all weekend (and week) to help us feel cozy in the blizzard(s). However, our candles smell kind of cheap and we're counting the days until their waxy lives are over. For a replacement, where's the sweet spot between looks, price and scent in a luxury candle?
A stylish friend of ours reminded us that expensive candles last a long time, so money might be better spent on a better candle. (i.e., the 14 oz. Archipelago candle says it burns for 90 hours!)

Greenleaf!
The smells are so lovely when I light one of these candles. I found these candles in a little shop in my mom's tiny town in Florida. I now buy them on-line at various websites and/or load up when visiting my mom.

People don't really spend $65 for a candle do they?!?!
Jeesh, there are starving children in Africa...
A good beeswax candle should do the trick.
Cire Trudon candles all the way!
BEESWAX FTW!!
I don't like candles much anymore (I've gotten too smell-sensitive in my old age). But I still love Heaventree candles. They smell so good, but don't give me a headache. I've only ever found them at Stein Mart, but I think you can get them online too.
Harmon!
Does anyone also know which candles do not have lead in the wicks? It used to be that the nice smelling candles had lead in them to make them burn longer. Bad stuff!
Uhhhh... a $60 dollar candle? Thats crazy.
Call me cheap but I think those small little glade candles smell great (and last quite a while too)... I think they are somewhere around $3?
I love candles and my current favorite is Archipelago soy candle "Havana" I do not like perfume types but of candles this one smells amazing kinda like you are in a Roman church-
http://www.archipelago-usa.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductName=Havana%20Soy%20Candle
I also love their Wasabi Mint-
http://www.archipelago-usa.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductName=Wasabi%20Mint%20Soy%20Candle
and Tocca Stella candle is delicious-
http://tocca.com/store/catalog/tocca-beauty/home-fragrance/large-candles/stella-candle-blood-orange-106oz
all of these burn nicely for many hours.
Kobo Candles!
my personal favorite is white birch and rosemary
I get the 3-color layered ones from Target for about $10-$12. They last a while and smell very good to me.
K.Hall - http://www.khalldesigns.com/ $25 and they last forever. From their website: "Lovely and luminous, our blend of soy and other vegetable oils burn noticeably cleaner than low grade paraffin waxes and is not "mushy" like straight soy. This blend has superior fragrance holding capabilities allowing aroma to radiate further. This blend is made from renewable sources and is grown by American Farmers. An all cotton core wick ensures a long, clean burn. Glass with an aluminum cover. Burns 60 hours. Made in the USA by hand."
Just buy unscented candles, lots of them, and use a reed diffuser for scent.
candelas! they last forever, don't harm your lungs and they don't burn down your house. I have a set of the 8 short ones and they last for 18 hours after charging. and they have a beautiful warm cozy glow - I never light candles any more.

(I think they are cheaper on amazon but vessel has good pics...)
STLcolleen those look beautiful and the have a fresh cotton one that I will try.
I forgot to mention Method candle. I love the citrus celantro I know that sounds weird but its very clean smelling and you can reuse the cute glass dish after by putting it into the freezer and scope out the wax.
http://www.methodhome.com/product.aspx?page=482
Bluewick! They're soy and they last forever and have wonderful scents that don't smell cheap and synthetic. I love them, especially "Vino".
http://ow.ly/16V9v
Plus, you get a nice glass jar with a lid when you're done burning the candle.
There's a soy candle from Target called "Peace" that's $10. It's very light and fresh.
The best candles, hands down, are by Harry Slatkin and Co. He does an exclusive line at Bath and Body Works, as well as Henri Bendel, White Barn, and QVC. They are affordable, but more than anything, they smell AMAZING!! Once you try them, you will never buy any other candle.
Circle E candles, particularly Bird of Paradise or Orange Vanilla.
You're missing the Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle, 9.7 oz for $30 -- aromas of bergamot, lavender and ylang ylang.
Does anyone know where I can purchase candles for a German Nagel candle holder? Thanks in advance.
I am a candleholic! I love high-quality candles but they can get very pricey fast! I burn them every day which means I'm always on the lookout for local sales. The scent quality and the long-burn is why I opt for high-end brands. Some times you can get the display samples on clearance at boutiques. Last weekend I bought three Seda-France candles (Iceland Poppy and Provence (2)) for $7.00 each in Pasadena. Typically they run no less than $28-$32 each. I don't mind taking a chance on quality vanilla, musky, herbal or woodsy scents, especially those on sale.
IKEA candles are cheap and cheerful.
BTW, I highly recommend Mood candles. They are DIVINE. http://ilovemood.com/
angeladee76 you can roll your own candles with bees wax sheets I use to do this all the time when I had an actual dining room. I would roll tall candles for various size holders because I could never find the right candles to fit the holders. Its pretty easy and they burn nicely without the drip.

I love plain but pure beeswax candles. They smell so lovely and are all natural. Not perfumey at all but still a really nice scent. I don't know how their longevity compares to the $60 candles, though, and never will.
Stella Mare soy candles are great. They smell amazing and last a long time. I bought mine at tjmaxx for about ten bucks a candle.
I am not a huge scented candle fan - too overpowering but the Bali scented candles from Anthropologie:
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?subCategoryId=HOME-CANDLE-CANDLES&id=993349&catId=HOME-CANDLE&pushId=HOME-CANDLE&popId=HOME&sortProperties=&navCount=15&navAction=top&fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProductSize=&selectedProductSize1=&color=040&colorName=SUN%20KISSED%20BAMBOO&isProduct=true&isBigImage=&templateType=
smell heavenly, and are light on the fragrance. They're $20 a pop, so they are what I would consider slightly pricey but they burn for 35hrs - so $1.75/hr?
This is by far my favorite candle for the price - smells so clean and fresh! "Romance" by Aroma Naturals. Lasts quite a while at a decent price.
http://www.aromanaturals.com/romance-c-35.html
i love paul robinett's aromatherapy candles, made in a little shop in columbus, ohio, where i'm from. they were sold at club monaco for a while. super chic black and white label and 70 scents.
I stick with unscented candles and get fragrance from those home fragrance diffusers (with the reeds stuck in a glass bottle of perfumed oil). You can get very nice versions from Target for $10-15. They last much longer than candles and often smell better.
Make your own soy candles! Economical, smoke free (and better for you than paraffin based ones), and a great way to recycle empty glass containers. They're relatively quick to do, easy and a good gift to others.

Unless all your candles are the same scent, lighting all of them at once would be overpowering no matter how expensive they are! Trick: have one expensive scented candle and the rest unscented. Target usually has a surprisingly beautiful selection and the large ones look expensive. One pricey Diptique, a few more Target pillars, and you're good to go! (PS: to have a lot of candles lit at one time I prefer small tea lights contained within glass holders. They throw off a lot of light, it's safe to leave the room, and they are extremely inexpensive if bought in quantity at IKEA)
I tend to buy a lot of candles from Bath & Body works, they tend to last for quite some time and I love the pretty glass jars they come in.
I also buy candles on clearance at Target, and from Ross, Home Goods, etc.
I burn candles allllll the time, so I am always on the lookout for nice candles at a great price. (I go through them so quickly, what's the point of spending $10 /candle, when I can buy them on clearance for less?)
Bluewick in their avocado scent is heavenly. And, at $30, you can get two for the price of one Diptyque.
Also, I use an Apothia Soul or Verde from time to time. They are a tad more pricy at $45 from Gump's in San Francisco.
Im normally pretty grossed out by most candle scents (sensitive nose) but I was loving the Voluspa candles at Anthropologie- and Anthropologie candles are usually the biggest offender of my olfactory senses.
They were $18 and came in really pretty tins. I'm usually lucky to find one good candle but there were about 5 I could have purchased on the spot.
mmmm, I want to go back just to sniff them again. Good stuff!
I love the Pacifica Mediterranean Fig, you can get them at Whole Foods and plain beeswax, too.
I love KOBO candles. They come in fun cylindrical boxes (that are pretty enough to display) and come with a box of matches. Most importantly they smell great!

I prefer Incidentals by 3 Piece soy candles especially the Flirt or Love Child scents. They are 100% soy and really smell great even for me because normally I hate scented candles and can't walk down the candle aisle in Target without gagging. They are only sold online and I first received them in a gift bag.

especially the ones made with essential oils.
My votes go to Banana Republic's Sangria and Ikea's Green Apple =)
I'm obsessed with Cire Trudon. Check them out at Barneys. Some of the most unique scents I've ever smelled. Totally transporting.
Cire Trudon and Santa Maria Novella.
It's always fun to read everyone's fav candles. Or even those who light 'fake' candles instead. I have tried to skimp on candles. The one thing I have learned, you get what you pay for. The quality of scent, burning and the last is the reason to go with quality not quantity.
I hate scented candles -- all of them seem overpowering, smoky, and vaguely like burning oil to me. I generally just pick up marked off unscented ones at Cost Plus at the end of summer and after the holidays when they are getting rid of the last of inventory or just get Ikea's. One trick for not having any scent at all is to "blow out" the candles by taking a skewer and dipping the wick into the melted wax, then propping it back out of the puddle. It lightly seals the wick for easier lighting next time and does not allow any smoke to escape.
Thanks for the tip LoriSF x
votivo red currant! i buy one probably once a hear. it freshens the room, smells lovely without being sticky sweet and feels sophisticated.
If you don't have a fireplace but LOVE the way one smells you gotta try our #62 CAMPFIRE ~ Joy candle!

athena soy candles - handmade - only $12 (a little more online at athenacandles.com)
I recently got a Market Candle as a gift. They are all soy candles and they come in great scents for only $10. I particularly liked the firewood sage.

This is the only time I'm going to link to something of mine, but they really are my favorite, which is why I have them made for us - just bee soy waxes, pure essential oils, and a cotton (lead-free) wick:
http://mysoultokeep.net/candle.html
Be careful with candles and really really read the labels - it's when you burn chemicals that respiratory problems kick in - so watch for the "made with" and "contains" deals that can mislead.
Apologies if anyone is offended for the self-promoting link.
Voluspa's French Cade and Lavender is my favorite, but pretty much everything they make is good and their tins are gorgeous.
Paddywax's Eco collection is slightly more expensive than Voluspa, but still awesome. The Thyme and Olive Leaf is an automatic gift for everyone, and the Bordeaux Fig and Vetiver is good for men.
Pacifica has some terrific blends, too, but I'm partial to their Mediterranean Fig everything. I'm wearing the perfume now, actually.
Patti Kay- Thanks for posting about the Shampure candle by Aveda. One of the best fragrances ever!
Burl Wood by Archipelago is my go to candle for rainy, cold days. It's warm and cozy in a candle.
Figiuer by L'Artisan Parfumier perfectly captures the essence of fig without being too sweet. It's a bit spendy but a nice splurge and who doesn't deserve to treat themselves to something nice every once and a while.
Trap Orange-Vanilla candle.
strong but not overpowering more vanilla than citrus. perfect for the washroom.
Votivo Red Currant...to die for.
http://www.votivo.com/
Rigaud. Cypress. They are expensive, but they last the amount of time they advertise, the wicks last the entire length of the candle wax and they smell incredible. You get what you pay for.

Discovered this company at a gift fair last year. They are called LIT and they sell loose beads of wax which allows you to create your own candle. I loved the idea of it and how these beads were infused with different fragrances and colors. Here's the website: http://www.lit.com.au/
