White Enamel Four-P...
Can I ask a completely objective, non-judgmental question?
Is there honestly a large market out there for $470 trash bins? Seeing as how there are a couple reviews on the product, there must be....but still...
What a timely post. My garbage can just turned itself into garbage. We have a robot garbage can from costco (it's not really a robot, that'd be awesome). It has a sensor for the lid and opens when you wave your hand over it. It's great for the little cans in the washrooms (it came as a set), but the kitchen garbage is used so often that the motor finally burnt out. Now I think we're going to find a more basic can. My sister has a simple human one that we like. She described it as being grossly overpriced, but said that she got a good sized gift card from someone for a "fancy kitchen store" and needed a garbage can, and had nothing else to spend the gift card on, so... I wish someone would give me a nice big gift card. ;) Haha. I'll probably end up with the $18 garbage can, myself.
hell no, cei-face, please make that comment judgmental. how is it even possible to rationally talk about $450+ garbage cans? even $150+. it's mind blowing.
I have the Simple Human garbage can which cost $180 and I absolutely love it. It's gorgeous, operates smoothly, still behaves like it's new, and the details (such as the holes on the inside cans to hold onto the excess garbage bags) make it absolutely awesome. Plus, the garbage can is a pretty large, visible, and often-used part of my kitchen. If I'm going to splurge on something (that's not larger, more visible, or more often-used), why not the garbage can?
I would consider getting square labeled one if the look matched my kitchen better. It's so cute!
It always amazes me how expensive these get.
My parents have the Simple Human 2-bin recycler and they hate it. The lid closes slowly so that it won't slam, and it makes this strange exhaling noise every time it closes. My mom thinks it sounds like a fart. People are always asking what that noise is when they're sitting in her kitchen.
@CEI-FACE: you know, I have one similar to the Vipp. Didn't cost 470.- though, my father found it on the street and I just had to sand and spraypaint it, but the thing is, that garbage can was used in a hospital for maybe 50 years or more and now after a few hours of work looks gorgeous again and is one of the things in my room which makes me smile every time I look at it. Point being: a garbage can like that is something that you can give to your children that can pass it on to your grandchildren ect. Right now I wouldn't spend 100.- on something like it but if I had money, yes. Some people buy 40.- dollar garbage cans every few years, I would rather buy one garbage can in my life that is also gorgeous to look at. But I just really adore the colour of the one pictured!
We have a moderate sized compost bin, a large bin for plastics & a small garbage bin. We live in an area with no garbage pickup; thus sorting things at home is must. It's only a 15 minute drive to drop off garbage, but nothing worse than un-sorted stinky mess in your car! We keep a reusable grocery bag by the front door for everything else, like cardboard, cans, bottles, etc & bring it with us daily when we stop by the grocery.
yeaaaaaahh. no. the $10 walmart trashcans do just fine for me.
man, I would LOVE to spend $$$ on a garbage can instead of replacing mine every other year because it's $15 and gross :/ I really want a dual compartment, but I bet my kids would put them in the wrong one
Akay,
I also have a Simple Human garbage can that started making noises. I emailed them to inquire about it, and they immediately mailed me a replacement part free of charge.
Before purchasing this garbage can, I would never have considered buying a $70 one but after this experience I'm sold.
My multiple cat home and trash cans used to be a problem. Problem was solved 25 years ago when we installed our first trash compactor. We had to replace it last year. And yes, we bought another trash compactor. Best appliance investment I ever made.
haha, that is the one thing still missing in our kitchen! i won't settle for a crummy trash can, so i am learning to deal with a garbage bag half opened hanging off a cabinet door until we find the perfect fit!
@fulinlin
"The garbage bin" is not high up on the things I'm hoping to inherit from my parents.... XD
(Nor is any of their furniture or other stuff, really, so there's that.)
I truly do not understand the VIPP bins. You can buy a trash can like I assume fulinlin has for much less than that. At least the Kapoosh has the UV sanitizing function, however much that's really worth.
@Lepidoptery: actually, it seems mine is a VIPP after all. At least thats what someone claims who is selling it for £££. I thought it wasn't since it looks a little bit different then the new ones but maybe they changed the look of it in the last 50-80 years (which is how old I assume mine is). I don't understand why your garbage can should be less well designed or inheritable than lets say a side table- after all it takes up as much room and influences the room as much. Put a cheap ugly looking garbage can in a nice room- there's no easier way to instantly take your room from great to ok.
I just think its great how things can be really well constructed, perform their task really well (my old trash can for example is great in keeping the smell inside the trash can and flies out! My trash was the only one without any fly issue this summer) and last forever so that you could pass it on to your kids (or just sell it) instead of plastic crab that lands on a landfill after a few years.
Funny that others have had their Simplehuman trash can make rude noises...just thought that I had a dud. Off to email the company...
I never did believe in a "luxury" trashcan. Until I broke down and bought a Simple Human (my husband had been trying to talk me into it for years). It's been a great investment. Consider me a convert!
I also have the simple human recycler, and I love it. Neither compartment is very large, but I prefer not to leave things festering anyway.
No weird noises (yet?), and I was willing to splurge based on their warranty and customer service. I was also able to purchase it with free shipping and a discount after filing a change of address with USPS.
