As a lapsed librarian myself, I'm in love with Jessie's terrific party. She shares: This party was so fun to put together for my daughter Bella because it is something we are all passionate about: books and reading!
Bella's reading has really exploded this year in Kindergarten and I am so glad she shares our love for reading. It was also a very inexpensive party, using books on hand for most of the decorations, as well as a few children's books from Goodwill that I used for pennant banners and the invitations.
I printed some Kindergarten-level word searches and some Dr. Seuss coloring pages to keep the kids busy while we waited for all of the guests to arrive. I also put out some scrabble tiles and they had fun spelling words while they waited. For games we played a 'Book Treasure Hunt' with clues leading from story to story, made bookmarks, and played a book version of a cakewalk.
In lieu of a gift, I asked the parents to bring a wrapped book for a book exchange. When the kid's book was called in the cake walk, they each got to select a book! Their favors included bookplates (downloaded here), 'book worms' and Dr. Seuss pencils, along with the book they chose. The pencils were from Amazon, and everything else was books!
Thanks Jessie! Readers, this is just a small taste of this creative party. Get more ideas for your own book birthday party on Jessie's blog Call Me Badger.

Great idea-- I love it!
Love! I want to have a party like this, like, tomorrow!
I put on a similar party for my husband's birthday. I did "old fashioned" library cards with pocket for the invitations, a cake shaped like an open book, handmade bookmarks for favors, and "book/literature" themed food/drink, Cider House Rules (apple cider) Green Eggs and Ham (self explanatory) Bean Trees, Like Water for Chocolate, you get the idea. Also had games/quizzes with prize of Bananagrams.
OMG this is a great party!!!!!
I love this and I love the idea of the book exchange. When I read about "no gift" parties, I always wonder if the birthday girl or boy feels bad about not getting any gifts. I feel like this achieves the same result, but not only does the birthday kid get a gift, everyone else does too! Well done.
Such a cute idea! I'm in love with this. How cute are those book worms?
I love this party theme, especially the book exchange!
I am a librarian and this made me SMILE! nice job. love.
Wow! I usually roll my eyes at themed parties, but this is so great!!
Oh I like that! My sons love books, so this one gets, well, bookmarked :)
