Jillian outdid herself with her son's book-themed birthday party. She shares: For Cash's 2nd birthday party I spent a lot of time on the details. The theme we decided on was the book Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina and the party was also a book party, so that his library could grow as he is loving to read more and more!
I handmade and designed the invitations which you can see on my my blog and I also commissioned some beautiful illustrations of Cash for his birthday by a great artist and friend of mine, Amy Pennington. She does incredible work!
We took some 2-year-old birthday photos of Cash with a mustache, channeling his inner "man selling caps." We also used the same mustache design that were used in his photos for the boy's goody bags & red tulips also from the book for the girl's bags.
On the day of his party we incorporated all of the colors from the book and created a wall of streamers as a backdrop for photos - the effect it gave to all of the pictures we took at the party was exactly what we were hoping for! It was inexpensive & didn't take long to create.
For the cake I spent a lot of time sketching, cutting & hand crafting the pieces that would be his pop-up book which my mother graciously baked and frosted. It ended up looking great, but beware if you do a similar cake design that the butter might seep into your paper pieces if you rest them on the frosting (unfortunately that happened to ours and caused grease spots.)
We cooked burgers and hotdogs, and had some of Cash's favorite foods: pb&j's, crackers & lots of fruit!
We had the party outside and since we were experiencing a heat wave in the St. Louis area we had a little swimming pool, sprinkler and bubble pool for the little ones to stay cool. On top of having a great day with friends and family, Cash walked away from the party with a huge new selection of great reads to engage his excitement for learning. I would recommend a book party for child of any age!
I had a lot of help from our awesome friends and family and despite the extreme heat, the party was a hit!
