Name: Dean (1)
Location: Nashville, TN
I have a history of going a little theme-crazy and overboard with birthday parties, be they children's or adults (see my older son's third and fourth birthday parties). I thought that I had escaped this problem with my younger son Dean's first birthday, until my husband innocently threw out the words, "The Dean's List." My eyes lit up like the crazy person I am, and I started scrounging up anything vaguely prep school-ish.We had "apples for the teacher" cake pops, Honor Roll-ups (turkey and cheese pinwheels), and a fantastic cake my mother made to look like a stack of books.
I made or borrowed all the decorations from friends and family or from my own home decor--just some cardstock pennants, a navy bed sheet for a tablecloth, ties from Goodwill, a trophy, some books, an old typewriter. We staged a vintage school desk (my in-laws') as a little photo spot for the kids to hold up birthday messages to Dean on tiny chalkboards (my only real purchase, other than thrift store neckties, from Oriental Trading). We also drug out the kids' chalkboard/art easel so they could get creative. Other than that, activities just including running around the back yard and playing.
Thanks Emily! Readers, check out more of Dean's party at Spaghetti Arms. Emily has a knack for this, don't you agree? Visit her new party-centric blog, Smarty Parties.
