Best Kids Parties: Pirates

My Party

Arrrrgh! It was not the most original theme but "pirates" was a special request from one of the birthday boys.

Since we were celebrating two boys, we had a whole fleet of fridge box ships and two aged watercolor maps. We're new to Minnesota so crews were mostly adults with the birthday boys as captains. All guests drew out pirate names, so we had a Golden Skull, Scarlett Dagger and other bloodcurdling characters among us.

The treasure hunt included shark infested croquet, walking the plank, and a jungle slip n' slide. We translated riddles into pirate speak and tossed water balloon cannons at each other. Crews also competed in peg leg race and swabbing the deck relays. When we came ashore there was a pirate pinata and the boys dug for treasure in rainbow rice.

The galley was filled with a watermelon ship, deviled eggs with sails, treasure chest cakes and other treats to prevent scurvy. We recycled old bottles, wrapped them in twine, and set them out on a rain barrel bar.
At the end of the day we handed out booty (homemade soap with pirate finger puppets inside) and sent the littlest pirates below deck for a nap.

Thanks, Airika!
