With a St. Patrick's Day birthday, finding a theme for my daughter Helen's first birthday was easy. But I didn't want to overdo it with Leprechauns and shamrocks. I wanted it to still feel like a little girl's birthday party. So I decided to go with a rainbow theme and the decorating options were endless.Pinterest was a great source of ideas, as were other parties profiled on Apartment Therapy. The rainbow flower cake was my starting point (complete with green and white striped cake layers on the inside), made by a very talented friend at work. She has done other birthday cakes for my son and they never disappoint. She added one tiny shamrock - did you see it?
Most of the decorations I purchased at a paper store. I am craft-challenged so the pre-cut flowers and shamrocks made it easy. My three year-old son handed out green beads and shamrock stickers for guests not wearing green (though most were) and the kids went home with rainbow pinwheels and a treat bag filled with Lucky Charms cereal. Helen is going to like her birthday more and more as she gets older - there will always be parties and parades on her special day.
