With a St. Patrick's Day birthday, finding a theme for my daughter Helen's first birthday was easy. But I didn't want to overdo it with Leprechauns and shamrocks. I wanted it to still feel like a little girl's birthday party. So I decided to go with a rainbow theme and the decorating options were endless.
Pinterest was a great source of ideas, as were other parties profiled on Apartment Therapy. The rainbow flower cake was my starting point (complete with green and white striped cake layers on the inside), made by a very talented friend at work. She has done other birthday cakes for my son and they never disappoint. She added one tiny shamrock - did you see it?
Most of the decorations I purchased at a paper store. I am craft-challenged so the pre-cut flowers and shamrocks made it easy. My three year-old son handed out green beads and shamrock stickers for guests not wearing green (though most were) and the kids went home with rainbow pinwheels and a treat bag filled with Lucky Charms cereal. Helen is going to like her birthday more and more as she gets older - there will always be parties and parades on her special day.

From a guest's (and totally biased relative) perspective - the party was amazing!
The rainbow theme was present in unique details, but not overstated - the perfect combination of cute, whimsical, and modern. The cake was darling and delicious, definitely the talk of the party (aside from adorable birthday girl).
Everything looks so cheerful! I love the rick-rack on the flower jars.
Great cake! It looks like a lovely party.
I love this party for so many reasons.... my daughter turned one on St. Patrick's Day too! And what was the theme of her party... Rainbows! We had a blast with ours too. Your cake looks lovely!
