December babies always seem to get the short end of the birthday stick, so despite the cold New England weather, short afternoons and Christmas tree taking up half our living room I knew I needed to throw my daughter a special first birthday party.

I went with Sparkle and Snow as a theme, with lots of glitter, twinkle lights and white with pink and blue accents. I printed invitations on blank cardstock from Target and cut the edges with a fancy paper punch to look like lace.

For the decorations I focused on cheap and homemade, like epsom salt in mason jars as "snow", crepe paper trees, hand cut paper snowflakes, twinkle lights, doilies, and lots of stuff I already had for Christmas. Of course Pinterest was a huge source of inspiration.

I started making Christmas cookies a few weeks in advance and froze them so I wasn't overwhelmed with last minute baking. Besides the desserts we had fancy-but-easy tea sandwiches, ravioli on sticks, mini smoked salmon pizzas, and amazing cranberry brie bites. I also set up a kid AND grown-up hot cocoa bar using a Keurig and K-cups with mini marshmallows, egg nog, powdered sugar, crushed candy canes, vanilla syrup, pink sprinkles, whipped cream, coconut flakes, cider, Bailey's, vanilla vodka, coconut rum, peppermint schnapps, and mini candy canes. It was a HUGE hit with everyone!

Since many of Caroline's friends are a little older I wanted to make sure there were lots of kid-friendly activities. I made a pull-string pinata with paper-mache and coffee filters, sparkle play dough for the party (with more to take home as favors), and a DIY snowglobe craft.
