Little boys and superheroes...is there anything more classic? E loves superheroes, especially The Avengers, and since there are so many things you can do with this theme we decided to go for it.
His birthday is in the summer and it's hot in the south so we told the guests to bring a costume and a swim suit. Since the party would be outside, we held it earlier in the day and set up a pool and slip-n-slide at the end of the "superhero training course." Of course, the slip-n-slide had slime at the end. Other activities were "Hero Poses" in the photo booth and a piñata.
For food we had hot dogs, fruit skewers, watermelon, green jello, "Hulk Juice" (green Gatorade), and "Power Pills" (jelly beans). For the grown-ups we served brats, veggies with hummus and chips.
The cake really is the centerpiece of the decorations. E knew exactly what he wanted and my sister, being the amazing aunt she is, said "let's do it." We obviously didn't need a three layer cake so the top two layers are cereal treats (Rice Crispies & Fruity Pebbles). My sister made the cake and had a little help from my brother in the decorating. With help from my party-planner mom, we set up a photo booth using painted empty boxes for a city with a canvas backdrop (so fun) and the birthday bunting was made from cut out comic books from the $1 bin at a local comic store. We also made capes, masks and belts for the favors with a little goody bags and medals for completing the obstacle course.
Thanks, Lauren Calnin!
