When our son was a tiny, swaddled newborn, we called him our little "Sushi." The nickname stuck and we decided to go with that as the theme for his first birthday party.Although it was tempting to incorporate all kinds of Japanese décor, we tried to focus on things you might find in a sushi restaurant. We named our restaurant "One" and decorated with paper lanterns, straw mats, and soy sauce bottles.
We served some sushi--which was gobbled up quickly!--and filled out the menu with teriyaki skewers of chicken and shrimp, edamame salad with ginger dressing, and miso soup. Among the drink options we offered green tea (iced and hot) and Ramune (Japanese soda that comes in a cool glass bottle, sealed with a marble.)
For dessert we made cupcakes that looked like maki rolls. We used black cupcake liners for the seaweed, white sprinkles for the rice and cut pieces of gummy candy for the fish. Guests were invited to decorate their own sushi-chef headbands with markers and stickers.
We were disappointed to be forced indoors by wet weather--the party was supposed to be at the park--but everything worked out great at home. The guests and our "Sushi" had a fabulous time!
