The theme for my son's second birthday was the farm. I know, I know... EVERYONE does a farm party. But Ronan and I visit a little farm by our house every week and it's our favorite activity. A farm party was only fitting.
For the backdrop of the table we sketched out and painted a canvas to look like a vintage poster I had seen online. We wrote "grow" at the bottom and highlighted the letters R and O, as "Ro" is my son's nickname. I found cow print balloons and used a mini wheelbarrow filled with produce on top of small hay bales for the table-scape. My sister made the gingham tablecloth.
All of the food was farm-themed. We served milk and cider along with: pig face ham and cheese biscuits, carrot crescent sandwiches, carrots-growing-in-pots cupcakes, fried chicken and mashed potatoes, and hard boiled eggs made to look like chicks. We also had farm cookies: tractors, barns, pigs, chickens, and cows.
My son's gifts were farm-themed as well and doubled as decorations. I set up his big barn in the window sill with a bunch of small plastic farm animals. They all wore miniature party hats, an idea I got from Oh Happy Day
blog. I bought him a stuffed chicken and placed it inside a real cage with some straw. He had the best time petting the chicken and feeding it straw.
My son had only one child guest as his party, his little 16-month-old cousin. They had their own little table, a vintage school desk from my grandmother and ate their farm food out of little berry baskets. Ronan loved his little party! His favorite part was taste testing all the fresh produce! Mmmmm...eggplant!
Excellent - thanks Kathryn!
