Names: Big Buddy (5) & Mini Man (3)
Location: Elgin, IL
Our boys are pretty close in age, 3 & 5, and their birthdays are less than two weeks apart so we always throw them a joint party. This year it was quite easy to settle on a theme; earlier in the summer we spent a week vacationing in Virginia and both the boys have been a little ocean obsessed ever since.
I didn't want to spend a whole lot on decorations so we relied mainly on dollar store balloons and streamers. I also involved the boys in the decorating by having them help make paper chains and paper plate fish.
Most of the eighteen children who attended the party were five or younger so we set up activity stations that they could explore at their leisure. Our activities included: digging in the sand for sea shells, sea animals in water beads, and a paper plate aquarium craft. There was also a lot of silly play in our playroom.
The only time we attempted to gather all the children in one place was for the smashing of the piñata, which was a shark that we had built ourselves earlier in the week. We found the directions for the shark piñata at Barista Kids.
The food also had a bit of sea flair: fish nuggets, a shark-shaped watermelon fruit bowl, and an octopus pepper floating in hummus. Dessert was a choice between shark fin cupcakes, or jello beach cups with fish and shark gummies swimming inside.
It was a whale of a time.
