For Simon's first birthday we had a small gathering of close family and friends at home. Despite keeping it simple I still wanted to have a fun theme, and when a friend sent me a photo of a cake inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle, being an Assistant Children's Librarian, I was sold right away.
I decorated our kitchen with cut out images of the illustrations from the book that I found online and printed out. I also hung streamers and a few colorful balloons, hoping to wow my little guy when he got up in the morning. It worked! When he came out and saw everything he was pointing and going "Ooooh!"
I set out an array of food, everything with holes poked through it (by using straws), to suggest the hungry caterpillar had been there. The favors for the few kids that came were giant white chocolate and rainbow sprinkle lollipops, also with holes.
Other decorative touches included pictures of the food adorning the cups (every cup was different so guests would know which was theirs), and streamers with more illustrations around Simon's highchair.
Simon opened presents, everyone sang "Happy Birthday", and we all pigged out on watermelon. It was a low-key yet festive way to celebrate my little guy turning 1.
