Both my husband and I love traveling. In fact we met each other twelve years ago on a train while traveling in China. The first year my son Alexander's life was full of trips from as far as Puerto Rico to local destinations such as the White Mountains in NH and Cape Cod. So a travel themed first birthday party was almost a no brainer.
The decorations were fairly easy to put together. We brought out our collection of travel books, globes, travel souvenirs and a world map and borrowed a kids' atlas from our local library. I printed a lot of maps from the National Geographic website and DIYed the bunting and cupcake toppers. We ordered sushi, Chinese food, Russian sausages, pizza and salsa and chips to give the menu a global flavor.
For games, we did a Chinese ritual called Zhua Zhou (it's common to many Asian cultures) in which the birthday baby is presented a bunch of objects representing different professions, and is then urged by the parents to pick up one. This is used as a way to "forecast" the kid's future profession. It was such a fun and successful first birthday party.
