Best Kids Parties: Summer Garden

My Party

Name: "V" (3)
Location: Essex County, NJ

For V's 3rd birthday, she specifically asked for a yellow themed birthday party. I interpreted the theme broadly and gave it a summer garden party twist, adding hot pink flower and butterfly accents.

Dorrie from Winks and Daisies provided the invitations and all of the party printables. The party was held in our backyard, under a tent, to keep the August sun at bay. The party décor was simple - we decorated with balloons and poms in various shades of yellow and used fresh yellow daisies in galvanized buckets (from the dollar bin at Target) as accents.

The main food table, draped in gold wood grain fabric, was set up next to the tent and held an assortment of goodies, both savory and sweet. On the menu were kid friendly applesauce cups, carrots and hummus, goldfish, grapes, watermelon flowers, cantaloupe stars, and beautifully decorated baked goods provided by Cathy from Swirled Bakery. The banana cupcakes were decorated with yellow frosting and topped with handcrafted pink flowers. The chocolate cake pops were dipped in yellow chocolate and decorated with yellow sugar crystals and pink butterflies, and simple sugar cookies, in the shape of flowers, were decorated in pink and yellow to match the theme. At the birthday girl's request, we also served yellow lemonade in jelly jars with yellow striped straws and decorated with yellow twine. The jelly jars were the perfect size for the party guests' little hands and their weight rendered them non-breakable...a plus in my book!

When the guests arrived, they were met with a table under the tent set up for crafts. Each girl decorated her own picture frame with paints, markers, felt stickers and foam pieces. Some also drew pictures for inside their frames. While the crafts were drying in the sun, the girls played games including a kid friendly fishing game and mini golf. The swing set was also in heavy rotation, as was the princess dress up box. Just try and keep a 3 year old girl away from the high heels...impossible!

At the end of the party, V distributed the party favors, coordinating hot pink butterfly wings, magic wands and butterfly nets. I had hoped to get one photo of all of the girls dressed in their butterfly wings, but there were too many other enticements and we could never get them all in one place at the same time! Between games, crafts, and tons of food, the girls had a blast! V was sad to see her friends go, but she proudly proclaimed the party a huge success. The next morning, she asked us to do it all over again...

Maybe next year...
