It's that time of year again... at the office, we're looking into holiday cards to send out next month. This is my biggest source list to date, and I've found a LOT more designers and stores to include this year. Most of these are small companies that print by hand on the letterpress, so expect the quality and the prices to be higher than what you'd find at the corner drugstore.

What is letterpress?
It's the term used to refer to real, old fashioned printing, where a zinc plate, linoleum block, or movable type is inked and pressed into paper, leaving a strong image, often with an indentation from the pressure. A low-fi, DIY technique, it has become very popular among independent artists since the '90's who print far more than just cards, and is often referred to as the 'Small Press Movement'.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Whoa - before you go purchasing anything on this page (though a lovely collection, indeed!), please check out minted.com.
I used them this summer for our wedding invitations and they are wonderful to work with, provide luxurious recycled paper as an option (we used it for our invites and loved it), and provide wonderful personalizations to each product they make.
I'm a HUGE paper nerd. Please check it out!
Hi, love letterpress cards. Great new company that is just getting started, One & the Same

Make sure to check out www.feltandwireshop.com. A ton of different letterpress printers and (like Starshaped press and Delphine) all in one place.
all of these are my favorites. love the texture and feel of letterpress. i've been thinking about getting one of those home crafting letterpress machines. have any of you tried it out? if so, what do you think? worth it?
I noticed yesterday that Apple announced availability of letterpress PHOTO cards via the new version of iPhoto.
Perfect blend of low-fi and modern.

Love, love, love letterpress. And don't forget to check out my lovely friends at Peculiar Pair Press. http://peculiarpairpress.com/
Another wonderful source (where you can go in person if you are in Chicago) is Orange Beautiful-- http://www.orangebeautiful.com/. They were highlighted in an apartment tour a few months ago and their home home was just as lovely as the store! Their cards are simple, witty and beautiful and they have been doing custom work for years. Please check them out!
here's an actual link! http://www.sweetharvey.com
That first one cracks me up. I think they mean "Peace & Good Will" as opposed to "Goodwill," as the latter refers to the organization that distributes clothes, etc to the needy.
Perhaps Goodwill should buy up those cards.
I looooove the mad libs christmas card. Love!
But why is everyone posting links?
Check out chewingthecud.com for more letterpress designs by viola
We have used Dolce Press before and they were very accommodating with production and delivery times. They also have great prices.

I too am a HUGE paper nerd! Nice to see my friends at Lunlax included in this. Jenni is wonderful and her card selection is lots of fun! If you live here in the Twin Cities check out her shop and her stationary Saturdays!

Please also check out Sarah Deutsch's work @ (http://www.etsy.com/shop/cardamompress)
She's contracted cityhopper studios to do the drawings for sets of cards highlighting landmarks in major cities. We've done Pittsburgh (not a huge city, but that's where we're from!), finishing up Seattle and Chicago should be out before Christmas!
Seriously...what's with all the link whoring? I'm baffled. Is the the Apartment Therapy Twilight Zone?
@HouseBee: I haven't seen so much spam since I went to Hawaiian Night at the Hormel Factory.
@sarasvati: The Salvation Army and Oxfam will want their own cards next.
If you love letterpress, you've got to check out http://www.birddogpress.com. A great little letterpress shop in Lyons, Colorado. Their stuff is simply amazing.
Good one perfidia!
But good gracious! Is letterpress the new stay at home momtography? I don't understand the tone deafness here.
Studio On Fire in Minneapolis and Boxpress in Syracuse are 'the' premier letterpress studios in the country. SOF's calendars are a MUST HAVE.
They commission local artists to create the illustrations. Typically they are comprised of a multi-color overlay and the depth of the press is incredible! I also love when they incorporate varnish for a bit of curated sheen. After working with them, all other press seems cute vs. crafted.

I would like to see a list of best photo cards. We just had a baby and would love to share a photo of her to our friends and families during the holidays. Any recommendations?
These cards are beautiful! Also, thanks to other posters for the links.
Great post! As a letterpress printer in a past life, I feel it's necessary to educate a teeny tiny bit more on HOW modern letterpress is accomplished. Most of these pieces are created using a photopolymer plate from a digital design, not handset using real type, etc. Glad to see the beautiful designs - keep on, keepin' on!
For those folks in Los Angels, Jonathan Wright and Company has beautiful letterpress cards and stationery. Add him to the list!
Definition of goodwill according to Merriam-Webster http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/goodwill
Thank you greerchicago! "Goodwill" is, in fact, a word, and those are lovely cards!
