While putting together today's Good Question on Murphy Beds, we came across some nice (and pretty rare!) examples of modern wall beds. Such a smart space saver, we're pleased to finally start seeing less traditional styling for these more often...
The first three shown are from the UK, included here for inspiration or for adding to your style tray for a possible custom job:

I've always thought these were smart, but who would want to take all that stuff off your shelves every time you went to bed. I guess perhaps if it was the guest bed...
I think that is the reason most of them don't have shelves. I had a friend who had one like the second one, the shelves spun around to the back and the bed was out (an already made) in less than a minute. Was quiet nice for the space he gained.
I love murphy beds, wish I had one!
I have a vintage 1920's rotating murphy bed in the living room of my apartment. I wish more places had them, as the instant guest bed if fantastic. It's up out of the way 90% of the time, until the unplanned guest needs to crash and wallah, intsta-bed.
Regarding the comment a/b "taking all the ornaments off the shelves everynight" lol- I would only take them off when company was enroute.. or I'd glue them all on there ; ) No, I really would! :)
Murphy beds are so cool.. I live in a Studio in Westchester County and am thinking of ways to create more space and believe me a MB would do wonders replacing my current monsterous King Size Bed.. which is a whole other story about my psychopathology, obviously?

Re taking off all the ornaments from the shelves every time you pull down the wall bed - I've seen designs that have shelves that basically pivot and hang at the lowest point. So as you swing down the bed, they would stay horizontal the whole way down, and none of the books/knick knacks/etc would even be dislodged. I think the first one (the orange one) is one of those.
I have a handmade Murphy Bed that pivots. It is a bookcase that pivots. Aside from being a beautiful work of art. I got it free on Craig's list. I paid for about $700 to have it taken down and reassembled in my Studio. It is one of 20. The carpenter has since passed away. So it is now a collector's item. I love it more each day.
