Whenever I'm looking for something new or cool or simply hard to find, there are a few online shops that I go to right away. These are the places that have the best design inventory, are hip with the trends and have websites that work well. Bookmark these and add to the list...
>> Velocity Art & Design (1999) - Based in Seattle, Velocity has much more than furniture and is funky in a West Coast way. How do they describe it? "Velocity's aesthetic is true present-day Modernism – an Organic Modernism."
>> Hive Modern (2002) - Run out of Portland, OR, Hive has a cleanly and excellently curated collection of "rare and unusual plus time-tested icons of design."
>> Unica Home - Run out of Las Vegas, these guys are immense. You could spend days poking around their site. Specifically aimed at European design, Unica has everything from large to tiny.
>> Design Public (2005?) - Based in San Francisco, Design Public's collection gets bigger each year. With a particularly strong bedding category, they look particularly for "fresh," American design.
>> Nova 68 - Based in New York City, Nova has a fine collection and keeps an eye on new European design: "fine modern design, luxurious room accents and classic toys and gems from Europe."
>> Highbrow Furniture - These guys didn't make the email either, but make the post. While I find their website frustratingly difficult to use, they have a very nice stock of liscenced classics from Herman Miller, Knoll, Kartell and many more. They also have free shipping.
>> DWR - I added this for the post but left them out of the email because I felt they we're "bigger" and more mainstream than these other shops. They are and they aren't. While their inventory is not as deep or as funky or as European as these other shops, they are slowly changing that and their website is one of the best. I use it as a daily reference, so it goes on the list.
