I'm in the early phases of taking advantage of my new urban balcony. While the marigolds, tomatoes, purple basil, sweet potato vine and Nasturtiums are holding on in the bright sun, these are my favorite New York sources for gardening inspiration!
• 1 66 Square Feet | A mix of travel, entertaining and small-space urban gardening.
• 2 Brooklyn Farm | Urban farming in a Carroll Gardens backyard — wonderful photos and practical advice.
• 3 Brooklyn Roof Garden | Great inspiration and growing archive of fun and practical tips, products, events and urban gardening eye-candy.
• 4 A Way to Garden | A wealth of knowledge, stellar photography and a supportive gardening community hosted by Margaret Roach.
• 5 BKLYN BKYARD A Tumblr blog of a laid-back mix of entertaining, gardening and backyard DIY from a Brooklyn backyard — lots of fun photos!
• 6 Mapleton-BKLYN | Well-documented and practical tips for urban gardeners — an emphasis on edible gardens.
• 7 Flatbush Gardener A nearly-overwhelming source of all things Brooklyn Gardens including sources for events, community groups and garden-centric news.
• 8 New York City Garden | Great images and helpful advice — great inspirational source.
• 9 Garden Bytes | Seasonal tips and peeks at NYC-area gardens from garden experts Ellen Spector Platt and Ellen Zachos.
• 10 Manhattan Rooftop Garden Project Great archives for inspiration — but no recent updates!

Thank you for the honorable mention !
I <3 Flatbush Gardener! I've been reading Xris's posts for years and enjoy his blog, so I was glad to see him included on your list. (I was going to post a link to him if you hadn't already found him!)
Thanks for the round-up! This is a great set of blogs. My personal favorite is 66 Square Feet; glad to see her on the list. Been really enjoying Brooklyn Roof Garden lately too. And Flatbush Gardener -- you hit the nail on the head. What a great resource. Excited to check some of the new-to-me sites out!
These are great picks! I'm a fan of Flatbush and A Way To Garden, myself.
That terrace in Photo #1 is simply to die for.

'A way to garden' is great...and 'life on the balcony' is also good for city dwellers...and 'you grow girl' is also wonderful.

What is on the floor of the lower patio in picture 1. It looks like terracotta. I need a fix for my patio which is currently black. Looking for an alternative to Vifah tiles.
What is on the floor of the bottom patio in that picture? Looks like terracotta! Is that tiled or is it a temporary solution like Vifah tiles?
Knick - mortared terra cotta tiles, yes. Stone is hardier, though.
How does that affect drainage? My patio is on top of the 1 story extension in the back of my building. So I'm on a roof. I suppose I'd also need permission from my landlord.

NYC urban garden blog......
Knick - you'd probably need to take some professional advice. You need a roof drain if you do not have one already. Also check weight limits - tile or stone is heavy.
The roof drains very well and quickly too. I was going to go with Vifah tiles but am worried the connectors will break or they will warp with temp changes. Also since it is not a perfectly even surface, tho for most part it is flat, but I'm worried they would not fit together well.
Any experience with those?
Knick, I have never used Vifah.
I don't want to take up AT's comment space with our back and forth so email me if you like :-)
Click on the link to 66 Square Feet, click on pic of me, and that's my email.
I think that http://www.roseredandlavender.com/blog/ is a cute blog
