I have a thing for pattern in interiors, wallpaper especially. I love the pure decor chutzpah of embracing a beautiful pattern in such a big way - there is something exciting about taking on the design challenge of such a strong commitment. Fellow wallpaperers, I salute you! For those contemplating this choice currently, there is a great crop of new British (they know what they are doing when it comes to pattern!) papers out this Fall - here are some favorites from the "what's new' file:
1. Anrapali Wallpaper from Designers Guild
2. Do the Stretch Wallpaper from the Vintage by Hemingway Collection from Graham & Brown
3. Circus Wallpaper from the Geometric Collection from Cole & Son
4. Loopy Lines from the Vintage by Hemingway Collection from Graham & Brown
5. Ottelia Wallpaper from Designers Guild
6. Hexagon Wallpaper from the Geometric Collection from Cole & Son
7. Deco Diamond from the Vintage by Hemingway Collection from Graham & Brown
8. Jacaranda Wallpaper from Designers Guild
9. ZigZag Wallpaper from the Bloomsbury Collection from Sanderson (seen through the doorway)
10. Mehsama Wallpaper from Designers Guild (also the lead image on post)
As you can see, the new British collections this season are heavy on both florals and geometrics, with a few seriously retro looks showing up in the mix. Color stories range from true multicolored looks to nearly monochromatic - with plenty of grays taking centerstage.

And one of my favorite fabric makers (make many of the Room and Board pillows) -- just sent out an announcement that they are now making wallpaper! Galbraith and Paul.

Yikes! Do people actually live with optically percussive patterns like these without suffering hallucinations and nightmares?
The florals are fun! But some of those geometrics remind me too much of the patterns in my pediatrician's office back in the days. A bit too sterile and repetitive to live with in a home.
In 5th grade I insisted on red-white-and-blue optical illusion wallpaper. Thank you, Mom, for insisting on just one wall. Awful. The damn thing popped and strobed at me all the time. No thank you on patterns. I had to live with that hideous decision until I was 18!
where is the link for the multi-colored diamond wallpaper? none of the links point to that one... thanks!
It is the right link, just the wrong pattern/colour-way of that collection comes up when you click it. You have to scroll through the collection below the image to find it, and the thumbnail is a bit deceiving - looks like shades of gray with a tiny triangle of green in the corner. When you click it, the large preview image is the colourful "Circus" print!
Really like 9! 10 reminds me of sheep.
The English doing one of the many things they do best! I love the modern interpretations of the monochromatic florals and the larger scaled geometrics. So many people are terrified of color and scale, especially Americans. Pattern and scale probably go against our collective consciousness of Puritanism and undeserved restraint.Remember that artwork, furniture, etc. go on and in front of walls, breaking up huge swathes of pattern. Thanks for showing those of us non-timid pattern lovers what we have to look forward to seeing!
Thank you so much fellow wallpaperer for this fabulous post. I'm a Brit myself and just love what my fellow country folks get up to with pattern. Especially loving the second paper in mustard yellow. I call Australia home these days and am on a personal mission to help Aussies love colour and pattern again. Wish me luck!
The only one I like is # 9 - but I actually like the wallpaper in the room in the background, the chevrons, not the at the forefront. :-)
eeeeek!
These are my mother's wallpapers (sorry, Mom!). Where is the fresh? Where is the fabulous?
I like them all. Except the first and the last florals, they are kind of like the worst 1940's/50's floral patterns I could imagine.
I love modern wallpaper designs but, because I spent many days stripping old wallpaper and patching the walls, I hesitate to put any up. Now I starch fabric to adhere to the walls because when you want to change it - it just pulls off and you rinse off the leftover starch with a damp sponge (perfect for renters) - and I always know I can find upholstery-width fabric that I love.
Yea and Nay.....Love the clean retro mid century looks. But all that bold and floral are not my cuppa tea.
Not feeling the florals, I have to say. They seem sort of fussy and old-fashioned.
However, I am eyeing a couple of pale, subdued geometric designs from Graham & Brown, to choose between for my small master bath (something that almost everyone tries to talk me out of, for practical reasons).
You can see them here, if any interest:

It is chutzpah! I don't think I could commit.
Meant to add that it does look quite pretty, though!
Some of those are seriously fugly. Oversized floral prints... WHY?
There are some great mid-century modern inspired wallpapers from British company Mini Moderns. http://www.minimoderns.com/

Too much optical stimulation for me. It's like visiting a fun house - I get vertigo. After a pressured, hectic business day, I need peace and quiet for all my senses. Patterns in the back of a lighted glass cupboard is the best I can do :-).
