The Conran shop has an interesting selection and most of it (especially the glassware) is surprisingly affordable (the rest is unsurprisingly not).
Katagiri (the oldest Japanese grocery in NYC) has a great little housewares/gift store just two doors down with some beautiful dishes. Lots of patterned blues you can mix and match.
Crate and Barrel is good and reliable for day to day staples you don't have to worry too much about chipping. Stylish stuff, though it tends to be on the clunky side.
Fishs Eddy usualy has some unique stuff and their prices are good too.
I like Michael C Fina. I got my dishes there and found the selection and customer service very good (though it was disconcerting to be the only woman in there without a big diamond). I'd also suggest Bloomingdales (for selection only; customer service is terrible).
Crate and Barrel has nice designs but i found out the hard way that they change every six months, so if you need a replacement down the line, you're out of luck.
Ikea for white porecelain plates and cheap glasses
Pearl River - esp. nice tea sets and kettles
Marshalls, TJ Maxx - beautiful glasses if you don't mind having a wide assortment of them, 'cause they are rarely sold in sets
Crate&Barrel - if all else fails:)
man do I miss Ad Hoc when I think of glasses
Ikea Pearl River
Cog & Pearl 718 623 8200 5th Ave at Sackett St. in Park Slope (they carry artist-made housewares like John Derian decoupage glass, and trays made out of recycled road signs)
Matter 718 230 1150 5th Ave at President St in Park Slope (they sell things you find at MOMA Design, plus)
MOMA Design store Broadway Panhandler
I forgot: Cost Plus World Market and Pier 1 sometimes have Pottery Barn-quality stuff at much lower prices. And Moss is great for fancy dinner services.
Simon Pearce - I just love the weight and feel of their hand blown glasses, it is such a pleasure to use them - good bowl (glass, ceramic) and v. good wood salad bowl collection
Bergdorff Goodman- If we're mentioning Michael C. Fina and Bloomies, BG should make the list as they have an extensive selection as well as a gorgeous selection of antique pieces
Hermes- Again on the higher end. Besides the whimsical china, they have a fab selection of bar glasses and I absolutely love their flatware
Ikea- strong everyday glasses
Mr. Pink - fun vintage glasses at this chelsea shop
Moss - a nice selection of unusual pieces for the table
The list goes on, but this is off the top of my head. I'm guessing Global Table is up there on people's list as well.
I like Fishes Eddy and I've received as some really lovely pieces from Apartment 48.
Fina has the widest selection of The Good Stuff by far. Very helpful sales staff, too.
I love Cog and Pearl -- great addition to the list. They don't come to mind to be for tableware per se, but they are a great place for thoughtful gifts. They aren't a tacky gift store at all. The store is a mini-adventure of unique vases, clothing, bowls and more.
I'd add Casa Armani to the Luxe list.
How did Tiffany not make this list yet?!?
And department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdales, even thouh they have REALLY screwy inventory policies on tabletp merchandise, and virtually EVERYTHING needs to be "ordered".
one more shout out for Bklyn designy housewares:
Nest 718 965 3491 396A 7th Ave at 12th St
Oh, and Kate Spade and Vera Wang have great tabletop lines now.
For good classic, everyday stuff: Fishs Eddy, Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. Pieces from there will never go out of style.
For funk: Pearl River absolutely. (a dangerous store to go into though if you are an impulse-buyer.)
For cool: MOMA Design, Conran Shop & Moss (yay Moss!)
For just plain gorgeous: Fina
if you're going to include Global Table, don't forget Clio Home clio-home.com
the voting seems un-useful for these things -- I like 4 or 5 of these places . . .
AT is starting to feel like aversion therapy to the democratic (that is Voting) process
Wow. Matter in Brooklyn is one of the most beautiful stores I have yet to be in. Easily comparible to Moss but much more approachable. The shop owner is incredibly knowledgeable of everything art/design wise. He manages to incorporate a great mix of new artists AND designers as well as the tried and true great contemporory designers. You should definetly make the trip if you havent been in yet. This is a shop to watch.
