sur la table is for people with more money than sense - you can get pretty much everything they sell there for far cheaper at the Panhandler, and you can rest tight knowing you're supporting a great local business

also, i love the martha stewart cookware they sell at K-mart - great quality for the moola

and for cheap le Crueset and wonderful reidel wine glasses TJ Maxx is the best

and if you want a unique, cheap spice rack, check out the collecting boxes/bottles at the Container Store
they're usually prettier, and cheaper, than the ready made spice rack sets, and you can come up with cool containers to hold them
i made mine out of a steel cutlery holder meant for a drawer and a bunch of plastic, airtight collecting boxes
in total the whole thing cost me $7, as opposed to $20 for a ready made one, and it looks really, really cool!

I'll second Broadway Panhandler, and add:

Chelsea Restaurant Supply (in Chelsea Market);
Woodbury Commons Outlets (great Le Crueset, Williams-Sonoma and Crate & Barrel outlets);

Besides another vote for Broadway Panhandler, I like Bari Restaurant Supply on the Bowery.

For small kitchen tools, I've had great luck with the house brand at Target -- their silicone spatulas are fabulous and so much cheaper than at other places. Martha's KMart line is terrific, too.

Personally, I like Sur la Table for browsing in, if not buying. The one in Pike Place Market is just beautiful. There's also another little store called The Spanish Table, I believe, just behind the market that's interesting. They have some stunning spanish ceramic. I realize that most of you are New Yorkers, so please forgive my Seattle references :).

Broadway Panhandler forever, man, especially for things like pressure cookers and demonstration of products. Zabars upstairs. Ikea. Mahthah Stewart at Kmart for sure. Bowery Kitchens here and there. Occasionally amazon.com, though I'm not proud of it.

To get all the kitchen stuff we need on a very tight budget we love restaurant supply catalogs and their websites like www.centralrestaurant.com and www.servu-online.com. In addition to the stuff we need, cheap, they have things to drool over like automatic butter spreaders. Of course, for things like Ball canning jars I always make a trip to Zabars upstairs.

I'm a big fan or acemart.com, i found them to be cheaper than my local restaurant supply warehouse and orders over $350 have free shipping. Some of the stuff is bad diner quality but other stuff is great.
