A while ago we got a chance to sit down with Judy Kameon, the talented designer behind the garden at the Parker Hotel, the Heath Store and the Marc Jacobs store, to find out a little bit more about her. We heard her speak at last year's Dwell on Design and were struck by a) how amazing her firm's gardens are and b) how down to earth she was. We're happy to report that she's just as genuine in real life and, it turns out, has a life that makes us green with envy (in a good way). Jump below to get the scoop on Judy's favorite plants and the nurseries that help inspire her:
With a background in painting and textile design, a passion for cooking and an enviable green thumb, Judy Kameon of Elysian Landscapes has a pretty rich life. She's been featured in Domino and Sunset multiple times for her lush california gardens. But the best is hearing her describe how each part of her life seemed to fall right into the next. Her passion for cooking, for example, prompted her to start throwing tons of dinner parties to see if she could manage opening a cafe. And although the food was good, her guests couldn't stop exclaiming over her garden. So she started helping them with their gardens. One thing led to another and here she is, a very sought after and talented designer. It should also be noted that she is a very hard worker and so makes things seem effortless when you know if you were in her shoes you might get totally stressed out.
Known for bringing a maximalist style to minimalist architecture, her firm Elysian Landscapes seeks to bring people outside by marrying outdoor spaces with architecture to create gardens that are an extension of the home and an architecture all their own. See their website here.
Here are her favorite plants at the moment:
Kumquats: We love citrus indoors too but had never considered kumquats. According to Judy if you keep them fertilized they'll keep producing fruit.
Kalanchoe: There are a lot of different varieties of these, but balorensis is her favorite. It's also know as the teddy bear or panda plant.
Epidendruns: A kind of orchid that has lots of smaller blossoms. Once it blooms, the flowers stick around for a long time.
