It may look big, but it's very, very small. Our bedroom is so dry we wake up with dry mouth and nosebleeds (only a slight exaggeration). Not a pleasant site. Part of the reason it's so dry is because we're using our ceramic heater to warm the room at night and it's created super dry desert air.
So, we trotted out to Bed Bath and Beyond to see what sort of contraption they could offer us. While we don't always find what we want, we were pleasantly surprised to find this micro humidifier or Personal Humidifier as they say. It takes just enough water to keep us humid through the night and is super small. It sits on our bedside storage counter.
It also has a cool blue LED light that illuminates the stream of humid air as it's rising up. It reminds us of Burning Man.
Strangely, you can't seem to find this do-hickey anywhere BUT Bed Bath and Beyond, so it might be brand spankin' new. The price is only $40.

Slightly off topic: I was using my new nespresso pod coffee maker --and as I was cleaning it I noticed a ton of steam came out rapidly. Anyone ever use a coffee maker as a humidifier?? Nuts? I think so. But I spent a lot on it--so I'm trying to figure out multiple uses for it....

Interesting ...I saw that one, and thought it looked too small for the average room. For nearly the same price ($44), you can get an excellent humidifier by Vicks at Duane Reade that will run for more than 12 hours (on low), but also has a high setting. It's quiet, and easy to fill and to clean. I've "road-tested" a couple different humidifiers this season, including a Holmes model with a huge crescent-shaped water tank that was awkward to fill, and a heating element that was so close to one side of the water chamber's wall that you could see it would be impossible to clean around it. It also was quite loud, and got way too hot on the bottom while running for me to be happy with it. I took it back to BBB. The Vicks humidifier is a winner!
I am in desperate need of a humidifier - my throat is like the Sahara right now. I think I may just go to BB&B tonight and get this!
Thanks for the tip.
even without the heater this dry weather is a reminder to use our cold air humidifiers; it's good for home furnishings as well to keep leathers and wood from drying out.
so it's also a good time to give leather upholstery and wood furniture treatments.
Last year I had a similar situation. The best one I was able to find is the GF211D by Slant Fin. What I liked was that it had both a filter to get rid of mineral dust and a UV bulb to kill bacteria. It holds 2 gallons which doesn't fit on a side table, but it holds enough that I don't have to fill it as often and I can actually lift it. And yes, I got it at BB&B, too.
We've had many, many cold air humidifiers over the years, including Holmes, Vicks, Bionaire, & an expensive Air-O-Swiss. Hands down, the best we've ever used is the Vornado humidifier, which is a real workhorse & so easy to refill. Vornado is known for its well-made fans, also used in its humidifiers, which have a 5-year warranty. While Vornado humidifiers aren't the most stylish, their simplicity makes them a real pleasure to use. Made of just 3 working parts, they are very easy to refill, quiet, & well-made. I ordered another for the bedroom a couple of months ago from Amazon for just under $50. Click on my name to go to the Vornado site. Filters are also reasonably priced & easy to get.
kolo, which model of the Vornado?
Pixie, I have both the 30 model (recently purchased) and the older, now retired 4x4 humidifier (replaced by the 40 model). The older one is still going strong after many years (8 or 9). One of the best things about the Vornados, unlike Homes & others, is that all makes take the same filter. I remember being unable to use the Holmes after a year or so because filters were difficult to purchase (& quite expensive). I tried using another Holmes filter but it didn't work too well.
I JUST got one of these at BB&B two nights ago. I love the small size, but so far, I don't think it is doing very much. Maybe if I had a bedside table and could put it right next to my face, its effects would be more noticeable. But I can only put it at the end of my bed and even with a fan helping to propel the mist around the room, it seems like it's too weak to do any good. I think I'm going to take it back and try something else.
I went to get one of these from BB&B last night, and someone had taken an pen and changed the descriptive tag on the display model from "Good in Small Spaces" to "OK in Small Spaces". I can only imagine an employee getting complaints and worrying about false-advertising!
It was cute, but I think I'll shop around.
Indeed, our bedroom is about 100 square feet and it works great and we were glad to find something this small and compact. If you bedroom is much bigger and you have more room, it is good to go with something bigger.
We also picked one of these up over the weekend. It's certainly cute and space-saving, but our major complaint with it was the blue light. It was certainly pretty, but if you need a completely dark bedroom to sleep at night, this isn't for you- there's no way to turn off the light, unfortunately. So after a restless night, we returned it and continued our search for something that would work better for us.
Vornado seems to have upgraded their humidifiers recently. The ultrasonic humidifer with the extra fan to circulate the humidity through the room seems especially nifty. Plus it says it will humidify 1280 sf which should definitely cover your bedroom- unless you're Don Trump I guess...
