Perusing the basic, useful, pretty things that make a great living room, the reading lamp is a must. I like to have at least one floor lamp/reading lamp in a living room to create a cozy spot for curling up with a book. This one up top is a nicely updated "black and brass" articulated lamp from West Elm that will lean right over and shine where you want it. In fact, all of the lights below will give you great light.

One of my absolute splurge favorites, the AJ by Arne Jacobsen was first released in 1960 and continues to serve. Coming in seven colors, it's not cheap, but it's a beautifully manufactured and elegant lamp.

Found on Pinterest and from a really lovely blog, this awesomely shaped brass lamp is from Homegoods and a great style that is hard to find but worth pinning. I'm going to keep digging for a source, but wanted to put it up here right away.

An old fave of mine that never really goes out of style, this was first released in 1986 by Artemide and designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina. I still have the desk version and love it's sensitive articulated movement. Comes in two colors and many sizes these days.

Part of IKEA's new and super cool Ranarp collection, the floor lamp is particularly pleasing. With a choice of either shiny matte silver or white, the standout detail is in the contrasting cloth cord that snakes throughout the whole operation.

By the British duo of Barber and Osgerby and released in 2008, the TAB is a super cute and powerful LED floor lamp that will tuck right into your sofa. With a pivoting head, the painted die-cast aluminum structure and porcelain reflector come in white or black.

Pharmacy lamps come in many price points, and they are ALL good in a pinch. The shape just works really well and has a warm, relaxed look. This one is by Robert Abbey, an excellent manufacturer, but you can certainly find something like this for a lot more and a lot less.
