Q: For my son's upcoming 2nd birthday, we are looking for a safe, easy to use scooter. I've seen a number on the market, some for toddlers, but can't figure out how best to vet them. Do you or your readers have any suggestions - what they liked, what they didn't and why?

Editor: I see many young toddlers in my neighborhood using the Mini Kick but I don't have any personal experience with it. I'm sure it also depends on your son and his dexterity. My son wasn't ready for a scooter at two and now, having just turned three, we're also shopping for his first one. Readers, what scooter did your child start with that you would recommend?

Sprout Side Table
My two year old is thrilled with his ability to keep up with the bigger kids in the neighborhood on his Skoooch scooter. It's expensive but really sturdy and pretty darn stable for a scooter.
we bought a mini kick for our daughter's 3rd birthday and it was the best gift... she scooters everywhere now... highly recommend it!
We had the radio flyer toddler scooter with the wide base and 3 wheels, and while it was indeed very stable, it was nearly impossible to steer. So in retrospect, I would probably investigate the turning capabilities a little further....
We started with the Mini Kick, and my now-3 and 4-year-old boys still love it. It has three wheels, so it's not too tough for them to balance. My younger son was scooting along on it at 10 months, and we have had a lot of experience with Kickboard USA through purchases, contests, donations by them to charitable events, and most recently, a required repair, and the company's customer service has been nothing short of spectacular in every case and in every way. We also won one of their adult scooters in a photo contest, and my husband loves to ride along with our boys despite his initial expressed embarrassment when I told him it was coming our way!!!
mini-micro kick scooter (pictured above) is stable enough for little ones and has a lot of maneuverability... trick-worthy even as they get older. my daughter upgraded to the bigger size, maxi, when she hit 6 or 7 and she still goes skating with her dad on it. tricks, cruising, bowls and makes long walks bearable for her.
My son loves his Radio Flyer--got it when he was two. I'd have to agree that it does not steer well, but he seems to manage.
Our 5-yr old has a Razor -- but when our 3yr old wanted one, we felt a bit hesitant. We went with the mini-Kick for him, and it's taught him balance. Yes, 3 wheels, but when he leans, it moves, so he still has to learn to balance. Yes, it costs a bit more, but it'll last him another 2-3 years so think of it as amortized cost and CL-listable afterward!
We had that Mini-Kick micro, and it was really good while it lasted; I would recommend it for toddlers.
Our twins just turned 2 last week, and we got them Mini Kicks. They love 'em. Haven't quite figured out how to steer yet, but they've got the balance and the pushing down!
My 2.5 year old has a Mountain Buggy Freerider which has been great for introducing the scooter concept as it's super stable with a nice large deck. It's also a really fun buggy board and I love that it has a handle for him in buggy board mode.
Now he's mastered it he is getting frustrated with the lack of steering and I am looking at moving onto a Mini Micro/Kick for more skateboard like movements.
We never got our son a 3-wheel scooter; instead, we went for a very wide-wheeled scooter by Micro, the Rocket. He started using it at around 3.5. He learned to balance with a Like-a-Bike, which he has used from around 20 months or so.
The Micro scooters are well-built, compared to many others. We really love the Rocket! The wide wheels make it more stable than other scooters.

My son got a Mini Kick when he was about 2.5 -- he was tentative at first, but soon gained a real sense of balance and ability to steer. He loves it, and we use it instead of a stroller when we go to the park (I can always pull him if he gets too tired to get home himself). I've seen a lot of our neighborhood kids on other scooters that don't steer as well or that have 2 wheels in the back, which makes it hard for them to push effectively without hitting their legs on the wheels, so I prefer the mini kick design of 2 wheels in front. I also think the height of the mini kick is perfect -- my son is very tall for his age (now 3.5) but it still fits him very well and I think he'll be able to use it for at least another year. Plus they have good re-sale value.
The only possible "drawback" is that it does go very fast -- but my son loves that aspect as well!
We bought Mini Kick for my son 3rd B-day and a year later is still a hit.
